I didn't have anything lined up to sew last night so I sorted 1.5" batik squares instead. I sorted into colors and into light value. Then I went through the light squares and pulled all of the ones that had at least 4 alike or 4 similar. I have over 30 light groups ready now to pair with 5 darker squares for 3" finished 9 patches. This will be TV night sewing.
I was going through a closet to find my father-in-law's slides to give to my son. In there was a box of nostalgia. In the 1940s and early 50s we got award certificates for certain things. I had perfect attendance 4 out of 8 grade school years. We didn't have kindergarten at our one room schools so I started with 1st grade.
There are perfect spelling certificates for grade 2 - 8. I'm assuming we didn't have spelling in first grade since it was our first year in school. We were only learning to write the alphabet. What a change from then to now. Kids nowadays are probably learning to write the alphabet in pre-school.
I still haven't made a decision on the binding for the Bear Paw quilt. This is what the sashing fabric would look like. The border fabric (my other choice) would just continue black out to the edge.
I spent a lot of time outside yesterday with garden and yard clean up. It was 68 degrees on Saturday and 83 yesterday. I was actually too tired to do much inside after that.

Okay, I'll venture an opinion! I think the binding would be better if you used the border fabric. The other fabric just adds a stripe of color that you don't need. Make the border and binding a one-color final frame.....and it's a great looking quilt, no matter what you decide to do with it!
I like the way the striped fabric echoes the firs border...;)))

I'm not at all surprised by your perfect attendance and spelling awards given how consistent you are with your blogging.
I'm leaning toward the binding choice you show in the picture, though I think the darker fabric would also work.
it can be exhausting this time of year trying to work outside to get things done and a lot of times towards evening I barely feel like doing anything. All that bending over taking care of plants! Those are pretty fabrics that you found, I have very little if anything from my early school days. My mother didn't really save things like that - I guess with so many children a lot of it got lost when they made their move to Arkansas from Wisconsin.
Oh Wanda I know what you mean about working in 83 degree temps. Especially so early in the season it’s exhausting. Saturday we hit 80 and I was working outside and couldn’t figure out why it was such a struggle for me, till I looked at the thermometer. Yes we had 80 Saturday and Sunday here in the Rocky Mountains also. I went back out after the sun went down and finished up my clean up and felt so much better.
But you still had energy to sort and go through some grade school memories.
And I LOVE the binding as shown today. Absolutely adds to your quilt top.

We had temps in the 80s here all weekend - lovely but hard on the body when that's the warmest we've been so far. My mom saved every bit of paperwork from my sister's and my school years. You can imagine what we found when we helped her move to smaller quarters!
I'll be interested to see a photo of a binding trial with the outer border fabric--I think I'd prefer that one.
I'll venture to say I think a tone-on-tone black fabric would frame this jazzy quilt perfectly. Perhaps you might audition one?

Our high today is to be 87*F so I'll give outdoors a miss and tidy, vacuum, sew and such indoors. Tomorrow will be cooler!

I also attended a one room school house --grades 1-5--and had to walk 1 1/4 miles to and from school--on country roads--this school was the last one room school to close in New York State--!!! those were the days!!!!

You are correct with saying preschoolers are learning the alphabet. My granddaughter learned the alphabet last year in preschool and has advanced tremendously in her reading this year in kindergarten. I'm astonished! My children learned to read in first grade and into second and that was only 30 years ago. As a former teacher I feel like we're pushing kids too hard and too fast. It's no wonder so many of them have anxiety!
What fun to find the certificate -- that your mother saved and then you've kept all these years. (I'm sure the Will Co. historical society would be happy to have them when you no longer want them.) I like the stripey inner border fabric as the binding. Hope the scrap square sorting is progressing.
Gorgeous weather! We enjoyed a forest preserve walk yesterday. I had an eye procedure this morning with mega-dilation so I have to stay inside the rest of the day.

I would have a hard time deciding on the binding for that quilt. They both look wonderful.
I am helping a friend move this week. Honestly, it makes me want to go through my house and toss everything out.....including my old yearbooks!
