This is not what I had in mind for the 4 patches I have been making, but I had to try them as a border for this second busy little quilt top. They definitely work and maybe I just need to use them and scrap my idea for starting another quilt top. I could add another row of 4 patches on the top and bottom to make it more rectangular.
The early Peonies are coming up. There is ne group slightly behind the birdbath and another group to the right of it. There is a patch of jonquils or daffodils in front of the left tree trunk. There is even a Forsythia bloom in the top right corner, out of focus because it is right outside of the window where I took this photo.
This is the strangest of all of the photos that came from my grandparents' photo collection. Doing a little research, I think it is a Woodmen (or Foresters) group from around 1905 -1910.
In this closeup you can see they are all holding the handle of an axe. Using a magnifying glass, I don't recognize my grandpa or his brothers in this photo. I'm not sure why they had this photo. Maybe my grandma's brother is in there. I think he died at a young age so I didn't know him like I knew the 4 sisters (Grandma and 3 great-aunts).

The four patches definitely work :). Old pictures often hold mysteries, don’t they?
Oh, love the quilt! I love old photos too. I've inherited quite a collection and have tried to get them all documented over the years by older generations before they passed away. Some I could not id I posted on a genealogy blog I have and some did eventually get identified.
We have mysterious photos too - lol! I love those peony stems, they are so welcomed in the spring!
Please let us know what you find out about the photo!
Four patches really work well all round your piece;)))
Fascinating photo--I often wish someone had written on the backs of some of my old photos who and what...
38 here this morning and sunny--still having coldish winds off the water though...maybe a walk outside around noon...still wearing my "puffy coat" for that...hugs, Julierose
The 4-patches are perfect for that quilt! I like the idea of adding another row at the top and bottom to make it rectangular. This is the perfect wild scrappy quilt!
I wonder if that photo is of a group of Woodmen of the World members? It is/was a fraternal organization that evolved into a financial services company (still in business) - I'm linking an article that includes some background and a photo of men dressed alike and all holding axes. https://www.statesmanjournal.com/story/life/2018/08/18/woodburn-heritage-carved-woodmen-world-tombstone-tragedy/37525751/
And I LOVE the newest borders! And I am with you about adding another row or two at the top and bottom to make the finished top rectangular.
This quilt looks great! I prefer rectangular shapes too,
What serendipity -- the four patches are ideal for this WIP. Interesting photo.
The four patch border is beautiful!
Your surprise audition really has the WOW factor. Love so many different blocks that you’ve created in this quilt top. ~ photo of your outside spring growth is refreshing ~ indeed an interesting photo of ‘Woodsman’ its a group I’ve never heard of before.
Very interesting article. Thank you for the link.
What a great idea to audition the 4 patches as a possible border for this exuberant happy quilt. They surely look good in that role!
Ah, yes, the mysterious photo among family pictures. We have several, too. How interesting that quiltdivajulie knew of that organization and link!
Off to the library today.
Hugs!
That is one wild quilt - and I love it! So nice to see the new growth of plants breaking ground.

that is quite an old photo - those uniforms! it is always hard trying to figure out why an old photo was kept when there is nothing written on the back.
I also love your 4-patches with this quilt. I support adding more to head and foot of the quilt. Lovely colors for finishing this beauty!

Oh that little quilt! It almost jumped out of the computer screen at me. It is gorgeous! Those four patches really moved it to the next level.
