Miscellany........

I haven't had a haircut for 13 months.  Luckily I have some natural curl.  My hair is about half gray and half dark brown so in the sun the silver shines.  My son said I look like I did when I was younger with my hair longer.  I told him I would take that as a compliment.

I was going through some of my UFOs and came across this one which I called Spring Star and was started early last year.  I never decided on a layout and stalled on the project.  I think it is time to make a decision.

I was thinking yesterday that our jumping from project to project isn't our fault.  It is part of our training in school.  We spent a little time on science, a little on geography, a little on math, etc. changing from subject to subject all day.  We didn't start on science and not stop until we had completed the whole year's amount and then start another subject.  So why do we beat ourselves up for working on many different projects?

And in the weather?  They are talking snow tomorrow.

Oh I like the way you think! That makes so much sense as to why I jump from project to project! That is an interesting block, it makes me feel so glad to have a healthy stash and that I could play with that idea as well.
Yesterday was our first coffee on the deck day this year...today will be a perfect stay in and sew day...life I. NW Ontario 😊

I think there is more to it!!! Creatives are always, always intrigued by "what's next" or "what if" or "how come" or "what else" and "maybe" and are willing to explore. Science is driven by the same curiosity and creative thinking. The desire to explore doesn't always mean a finished project or outcome, it is the exploring that is the fun part!!! A finish is nice too... Hoping the snow is a wet spring one and not the dry cold one of deep winter.

Really pretty star block...looks like it might become a medallion?
Yes, school learning may have set us on this jumping around path. You are right, we shouldn't beat ourselves up over it.

It's been 13 months for me too, and my hair (no curl) is longer than it has ever been. I love your sentiment about multiple projects.

I love that star block is that the Carpenter's Wheel pattern? Star? I really like it. I wasn't going to get my hair cut in the pandemic as I worried about it and then once when I was grocery shopping I saw that the beauty shop there had no one in it so I stopped and asked for a haircut and masks were left on and I got in and out quickly - since then I have gotten one only every 3 months or so when no one else is around - all of the old day is grown out now and I have white/dark gray hair now - I'm glad I stopped once in a while. My hair only has a little curl in it if I keep it short, if it is longer it is straight and no body.

I just love that block.....and the fabrics! I remember when you were working on it. Weren’t there several blocks or is this just one that was left over? I have had two haircuts, both in the past 6 months. If my son said I looked younger with my hair long, I would have skipped the haircut too! Enjoy your snow! You will wish for it this summer....

Love the quilt block and your thinking, Wanda. It wasn't only school that has taught us to jump from one project to the next. Think about running a home, raising children, and perhaps holding a job or doing a long term project as well. Women particularly are masters of quick switching, concentrating on something for a short time, finishing whatever it is over the course of time. Aren't we all wonders for what we accomplish day by day? Ah, spring! A time for fresh perspectives.

It seems strange to see you with your hair so long, but it's really pretty, Wanda! I'm glad you've dug out those blocks. I remember your working on them last year. SEW beautiful!! I'm hoping that you will finish the quilt this year.

Oh Hell Yah...
What you and the others have commented on this post!
Its amazing to me how many of those balls in the air we have going and still manage to finish!!!!

I decided some time ago that not every start had a finish.... Sometimes the purpose of the start is just to see if an idea has possibilities or not. So the purpose of the start is to give foundation to an idea

I love that block, particularly all those light fabrics. I get my hair cut every couple of months with my hairdresser wearing a mask. I can stand it getting longer for only so long.

That thought on jumping form project to project has some truth to it. That was also reinforced in my work life. In later years I was a lead on about 6 projects at a time and was constantly having to switch gears between projects and keep all on track. Most in different stages of development with different delivery dates. Now if I don’t have at least a couple of projects to work on I tend to do nothing because I can’t seems to focus. And no deadline....forget about it ever getting done in a reasonable amount of time. I need a delivery date.

I'll say it again: you are a genius! When I think about it, you are absolutely right. Years of training to switch projects!
Also, you look marvelous!

Your hair looks good for not having a haircut for 13 months. I know you usually wear it much shorter. My brother in California hasn't has a haircut for a year and he has all this wild white hair! We keep telling him he could put it in a man-bun. He prefers the bed head look. LOL!! That quilt is so pretty. I like your thought on jumping from project to project. I guess that is why we have UFO list which you explain it's not such a bad thing!

Wanda, love the hair- you do look younger. That curl looks great on you. I just finished quilt retreat and finished 4 tops and got a jump on other stuff like sewing strip sets. Being able to concentrate on one thing at time there really helps me. I am not a good multi-tasker, but people require it of me. The Spring Star looks wonderful- I know you will work your color magic on it to finish it.

Spring star is so fitting for these days that feel like spring. The fabrics just sparkle, like rays of sunshine.

You look "cute as a button" with your long hair. And I'm so jealous of your natural curly hair. I've cut my own hair since high school and have tried stylist from time to time but always come home and have to reshape it.

So wonderful to see your photo. It is nice to put a face to a name. I haven't had a haircut for more than a year too. Your spring star is gorgeous. Yes we might as well blame school for our lack of focus on a particular project. It is definitely more fun that way.

Love that star!
Also enjoy the thoughts on jumping around. I have a touch of ADHD and my quilting friends were telling me to finish this or that and not be a "squirrel chaser" until I went to a quilting class with Elizabeth Barton who also has a degree in psychology and she gave me permission to work with the way my brain works instead of trying to work as other people told me. I love that woman! You too, Wanda!(http://elizabethbarton.blogspot.com/)

I love that explanation for multiple projects! It makes total sense to me.
I’ve had my hair trimmed once in the past 14 months. Thankfully, I had let it grow long before the pandemic so now just live with it up in a ponytail or messy bun.
I love the spring star - it’s cheerful as can be with those fabrics.

That's a great picture of you, Wanda. And hair still half brown at 80. But since you usually keep it short, I'm sure it's bugging you. My hairdresser has her shop in her basement and keeps her clients scheduled far enough apart so she can sanitize between them. I did make one spring star block last summer, but haven't quilted it. I should get it done and hang it on the front door.

I'm finding that I'm getting more comfortable having several projects going at one time... as long as I don't put one in the drawer. Once that happens, it's going to take a long time to finish it. But it's nice to move from project to project for a break and some mental stimulation.

Your hair looks much better than mine! I also have not had a haircut for over a year. I've cut my own bangs several time. My hair is really a mess! I think that once I get the vaccine, the first thing I'll do that I haven't done this year is get a haircut!

Are you getting that big storm that is hitting the central part of the US? I have a friend in the Denver area who had drifts so bad she actually can't get out of her house!

I hope you're safe and warm.

Love the star and I love those curls - oh I wish I had curls!
My hair is neither straight nor curly (except for those new growth whisps that are like corkscrews especially in damp or humid weather) but more wavy. I decided I'd grow my hair long when we moved here 2 years ago - then it was above the shoulder. Now it is pretty much waist length. I'm much happier, never liked it short - it would never be tamed apart from being braided, which it is now. My mother calls herself Rapunzel and I guess it is a similar length to yours - minus curls! LOL!
Many thanks and I hope the snow is no more than a fleeting glimpse.

That block from the half square triangles is going on my list. And having curls is definitely a bonus when it some to easier care but I sure would love to get a haircut soon.

Thank you for sharing your photo, Wanda! I love your hair! It looks free and creative! I have been cutting (hacking) my own hair for over a year and it's begun to look a little strange. And I love having multiple projects brewing, although sometimes feel guilty at how many I need to complete!

Beautiful photo of you Wanda! My hair is completely white which still shocks me sometimes when I look in the mirror. I always want to work on at least 3 or 4 projects at a time and that is a great analogy about our training at school.

Spring star is very pretty.......I like that layout........and yes we never finished anything in school........always doing a bit then onto something else.....its nice to have different things to work on as when you stall on one you can move onto another then come back to it refreshed...........
