Sunday only project final blocks..............

I sewed the final group of triangle strips together last night.  Each row needs a half block and I needed 3 whole blocks.  I will play with the layout next Sunday.  I can't press any of these yet because I want seams to nest when I sew horizontal rows together.  It will be a challenge to get all of the blocks to stay on the design wall with their unpressed state.

I had a nagging feeling the the stripes were not going to line up properly if I followed the directions in the Tapas pattern.  I remember way back in my 65 year quilting career that I had done something like this before and it didn't match.  I made a sample strip set and cut it like the pattern says. Look at the center pink strip.

There are 2 kinds of triangle rulers, one with the point nipped off and the other one pointed.  Following the directions I would be cutting it like the one on the bottom which is my setting triangle ruler (and the only one large enough).

The one on the right is my second try with the tip nipped off and it matches.  Meanwhile I tried other layouts with the 2 sample blocks.  Making the samples I get 2 blocks alike out of one strata of strips.  In the quilt the same blocks would not be next to each other.

Then I took all 4 sample blocks and tried some layouts.  Maybe I would like this one better than the pattern.

If you missed the pattern in previous posts, here it is again.

I got 7 stratas sewn ready to press and cut into triangles today.  I will sew two triangles into a block and then play with the layout.

This is the first orange cactus bloom that was in a place I could get a photo.  With a picture window behind my plant stands it is hard to not get a glare while still letting in enough light to take a photo.

My favorite pink one is still blooming too.  I have never had so many of them all blooming at once.  One red, one white and 3 champagne are all still blooming by the other picture window.

Thanks for the tip on the Tapas pattern...I'm going on a quilt retreat and that is one of the patterns I have out to possibly work on. Maybe I'll stick with more mindless work for the retreat!

What a difference that ruler makes!! Nice to know--such pretty stripes...
Your cacti are just lovely...I am still hunting...
It is 51 degrees this morning--so warm and it rained all night...

I'm glad you found a resolution for matching your strip sets. Sometimes these specialty tools can be very handy.

The cacti are so pretty! Looks like you are going to have fun playing with the Tapas blocks.

I wonder how many of this pattern lie unfinished in the back of closets when they found the strips don't match up if the directions were followed? A Very Good lesson in making a test block first, I guess?

If someone did cut all the pieces with the pointy corner ruler, would it work to sew it so the strips line up and then trim to a square? I know it would affect block size though. I'm *think* I see how the ruler made a difference. I'll have to give both of the rulers and the trim to size method a try for it to really make sense. A very good use for some of that nasty, thin, poor-quality chain store fabric I put on the "not for use in quilts" pile!

If this were my book, I'd be writing that change right with the pattern. A reason I prefer old fashion paper books.

It could be called "Ever on Sunday" (as a play on "never on..."). It must take fortitude to NOT press them.

What an awesome post today Wanda, a treat to see so much going on. Don’t know how you do it all… It looks like long hours of creative working.

I can see how it would be frustrating to discover that the seams don't match when you follow the pattern directions. I'm glad you found a solution. I actually like the pinwheel layout - it avoids the matching problem and makes the whole quilt design more your own.

I've been missing post reading and now playing catch up, such a treat to see your Sunday only blocks up on the wall, lots and lots of colour, lovely. Your KF stripe quilts are amazing, Tapas is stunning!!! #3 reminds me of Spring with all the greens and so good to see the strip sets of KF fabric, beautiful as always.

I had a similar experience trying to make this quilt. Unfortunately, I made all the strip sets and cut out all the triangles before trying to put it together. Lesson learned. I talked to the woman at the store who had made a sample and she said that she had to redraft it. Fortunately, I came up with a way to arrange the pieces into a completely different pattern that a really like. Quilting is great!
