I went with the green flowers for the 6" center of the big block. The small churn dash blocks are 9" finished and the large one is 18" so this is still a pretty small project, just 45" square. Just one big block looks good now with this many small blocks. When I add more small blocks I wonder if it will need more big blocks.
When I made this quilt top back in 2017 I had just one large block but of a different pattern than all of the other blocks in the quilt top. I like the big block a little off center so that means on the churn dash top I probably will want an uneven number of blocks across like it is now at 5 but too small of a quilt, so 7 across is more likely the answer (63"). That means at least 9 blocks down so I need another 38 nine inch blocks. I guess I had better start pulling fabrics.
Just a reminder and link for the occasional readers of my blog: my pop-up shop is open for a week, click here. Several people have mentioned to me that they just read my blog once a week so I don't want them to miss out.

You've given me a great idea for using some large blocks in my parts department. I think that's a yay and a boo at the same time :)
Lovely big block quilts...no math challenges at your house :l)))
I especially like the 2017 one--with the 3 sizes...nice work

These are both such beautiful quilts. The way you play with size adds so much!
The larger block is perfect.
I really like this combination of small and large blocks. I think I'll do some veterans quilts this way.
I love the blocks you have made and the fabrics you have chosen. I can see you making some mini churndash blocks and adding them into the mix. LOL Love those math challenges! I know we are all looking forward to your next projects whether it is in the sewing room or in your yard. Stay cool!!!

I'm like you in that I usually like things off center but in this case I could see simply adding a row to the top and right so the large churn dash is completely centered in a square layout. Something about the block just feels comfortable to me in a square layout. And you'd only have to make 11 more blocks.
Churn Dash is spectacular... Your fabrics as usual are amazing with vivid color. Its fast becoming one of my favorites. . . And thanks for showing BLUE patch piece, I had forgotten about that one. Another beauty.

Both beautiful quilts and I don't recall ever seeing the 16 patch with the star before, it's fabulous!
