My original idea was 16 patches with the plaid 2.5" squares but first I had to try another idea. I was thinking dark Xs across the blocks. It didn't do anything for me so I abandoned this idea.
Next I started pairing 2 values for 16 patch blocks to see how many I could make from the trays of squares. I ended up with 26. Since the blocks are going to be 8", 25 would make a quilt 40" square, perfect for a baby quilt. If I did alternate blocks of either 4 patches or 8" squares I could double the yield but it would only make a quilt 48" x 64". I think I would prefer another baby boy quilt.
I got 6 blocks sewn but not pressed yet. The rest of the blocks are darker because I sewed the light ones first while I had light thread on the machine.
Several storms rolled through late yesterday afternoon into the evening. The rain sounded heavy at times so I'll check the rain gauge this morning and hope for over an inch of rain.

I like the checker boards. I was jealous of your tray of plaids yesterday and decided to pull out and cut into my meager plaids. :D
These will make a great baby quilt. You wasted no time getting it underway!
Plaids are such a unique fabric. Your blocks look terrific- nothing but a plaid would look like that.
Nice groups of plaids with the alternating light ones...this will be a really cute baby quilt...
Only 52 this morning when i awakened to go food shopping...
Waiting for the sun to send all the clouds away so we can sit on the deck when it warms a bit...

Love hearing about how your designing went along with your final choice. And it couldn’t be any better. Final blocks look so charming. I always love the precision of a plaid.
What a delightful variety of plaids and they look so good together!
Our July rain is long gone and we could use a gentle all day rain. Today is the second overcast day without much rain. 78*F for the high today so that's a treat!
Hugs!
The first picture was the X blocks? To me what I liked was the center 9 patch that contrasted with the outside perimeter. The 16 patch blocks are great! I especially like the ones where you used different fabrics in the same color range.
The block you auditioned but abandoned is the featured block for August 18 on That Patchwork Place's 365 Quilt Blocks perpetual calendar. (I've had it on the table next to the sewing machine for years and years and flip the page every day out of sheer habit.)
I love the look of these checkerboard blocks done with the plaids. Gives me another idea for some of these mens shirtings I've acquired. Those original blocks were nice as well. Maybe they'd resonate more with the same fabric for the dark X going thru them?
the plaids are a nice variety. We might get rain tonight - I hope so
I like Patty’s idea! -Roxanne
I saw what Patty saw in the first blocks, especially the the first one with the darker 9-patch in the center. The plaids will make a nice boy baby quilt.
