First February finish...............

The flannel quilt is finished.  The tumblers are 9" cut with my Studio die cutter.  It is 69" x 89".

The back is a red print flannel and the batting is Hobbs 80/20.  I used So Fine medium tan thread on top and red Bottom Line in the bobbin.  The binding is a red on red yarn dyed woven check.

I sewed some more triangles that could become more Winged Star blocks or just pieces and parts for a future project.

Doing my daily quota I trimmed 15 more blocks while watching ice skating on TV.  I have about 35 more to trim and then I can play with them on the design wall.

Machine quilting.........

The backing seam was sewn on Friday but I didn't load this flannel tumbler quilt until yesterday.  Late in the day I decided I just needed to get it done.

A big loose meander was all it needed to keep it super soft and cuddly.

The backing is a deeper red than it looks like here and it is a print, not a solid color.  It is a lighter weight flannel than some of the ones on the top so it is really soft and drapes nicely.  I'll look for binding today.

I trimmed another batch of improv blocks.

Last week I ordered some of my favorite candy, milk chocolate vanilla buttercremes.  Nobody makes them like Fannie May!

Sorting triangles.................

I had 2 small boxes of 2" finished triangles and decided to sort them while I watched TV.

Now I have stacks of at least 24 triangles in a variety of prints that read the same value and color.  There is the potential for 19 more Winged Square blocks.  I have to make a decision which layout(s) I am going to use first.  (See yesterday's post.)

Next in line was trimming the batik improv blocks to any even inch + 1/2 inch.

I put them up on the design wall as I trimmed them.  I found 21 more blocks yesterday.  I was pretty sure when I showed these blocks a couple days ago that there should have been more.

Since most of the blocks can be trimmed to 10.5" tall I could sew them together in rows.  There will be one group that is 9.5" tall and I have trimmed 3 of those blocks so far.

There are lots more to trim.  I'm going to try to get 15-20 trimmed each day so sometime next week I can play with all of them on the design wall.

24 blocks............

First I will show the 4 newest blocks made yesterday and the day before.

All fabrics are Kaffe Fassett Collective.  This one is a Philip and a Brandon.

This is the original layout with the new blocks added.  I had a hard time getting it all in the picture.

Next I tried color grouping and this one didn't appeal to me at all.

Next I pulled out all of the light background blocks.

Then I tried all of the light blocks in a layout.  These last 2 layouts were to see if I would want to make a quilt with all dark or all light blocks.  I really like this last one.

Looking ahead............

I had some fun yesterday looking for fabrics for the last 2 Winged Square blocks.  After I get them sewn I can play with some layouts with all of the blocks.  I want to try color grouping as well as all dark blocks in one layout and all light blocks in another layout.  I may end right back with my original layout.

We got 5.5 - 6" of snow yesterday.  I tried to measure in several spots because there was some drifting.  It measured 7" up near the garage.  I was sensible and shoveled 3 times so I didn't have to lift the whole depth at any time.

I put my improv strip pieced blocks from 4 years ago up on the double design wall.  I have 12 more blocks that wouldn't fit.  I have been thinking about these blocks for awhile and think I need to trim them all with straight edges and then figure out how to use them.  Here is where I played with them last as a group.  Actually I made quite a few more blocks after that photo.  It's all a mystery right now..........

Official portrait............

The Seed Packet quilt is done after 4 1/2 years.  I actually started cutting for it in November of 2016.  I finished piecing it in July 2017.  It is 65" x 82".

This link will take you back to the inspiration quilt in one of Kaffe Fassett's books.

I mentioned yesterday that I went back and added more lines of quilting after the first session on Sunday night.  This is one of Philip Jacobs prints on the back of the quilt.

The binding fabric is one of my favorite Kaffe prints.  It shades from pink to red in the print.  The red version was my favorite and I have several yards of it.  I have half yards of some of the other colors too.

This is one of my favorite fabrics in the quilt.

The fabrics are from my vast collection of floral fabrics from way back in the 1990s to the present in addition to the Kaffe and Philip Jacobs prints.

This is one of Kaffe's prints from many years ago.

For my other project: these are the fabrics for the next 2 blocks in the Winged Square.  I have misplaced on of the pink triangles so I'll be looking for that today.

Monthly recap for January 2022

I completed 3 quilt tops in January.  The yellow crazy pieced small quilt top was started last year and it is 36.5" x 46.5".  The center quilt top is flannel, was started and finished in January, and is 56" x 76".  The tumbler quilt top is also flannel and is 71" x 90".  I hope to get both flannel tops quilted soon.

I had 2 finishes in January.  The first is a Kaffe fabric orphan block quilt.  I started playing with the design last year and got the top finished in December, quilted in January.  It is 48" x 63".

The second finish is the Seed Packet quilt.  I worked on finishing the binding by hand until 11:30 last night.  It is 65" x 82".

This quilt top was finished in July 2017 so it waited 4 1/2 years to be quilted.  It was a labor intensive quilt with all squares fussy cut to more or less center a bloom.  And of course first I had to find all of those fabrics and then cut holes in the fabrics when fussy cutting. There are 72 large squares and 144 small squares.

This shot is a close up of the backing, binding, and quilting.

I'll show more details of the quilting on tomorrow's post but here is one photo to show I went back and quilted between the lines I had quilted Sunday night.  Now the closest lines are about 1/4" apart and the farthest are a little over 1/2" apart.
