What was I thinking?

Just so you don't think that everything I make is a winner, here is what I made last night. What in the world was I thinking? It looked ok when I laid it on the dotted fabric, but then I forgot to cut the sashing on both lengthwise and crosswise grains to have the dot lines all going the same direction. It is a total disaster and I haven't figured out any way to save it. It is only 13" x 14" so I haven't wasted a lot of fabric. I liked Cathi's suggestion yesterday about using some of my strip sets on journal quilts. What is more "me" anyway than a bunch of little pieces made into strip piecing.

I didn't get any farther than just laying a couple pieces on a base though.

Right now you make think the black and white dot piece is bad.
IT'S NOT!
Put it away for a while and take it out when you've forgotten about it and you may get a new opinion of it.
It's often hard to evaluate your own work.
Trust me - it's good.

I kinda like it too.

It's not my favorite as a quilt, but I always like color with black and white. Maybe you could make this into a purse or tote?

I kinda am with Kay. My first thought is that I liked the quilt. I still do. I think that sometimes you just have to set it aside and then come back to it. You may feel differently another day.

I like it. I think it's a great background to embellish either with quilting, or painting, discharge, screening. etc. You get the picture. I really think it could be a wonderful small quilt!

I have started many project and then looked at it and thought the same thing, but it is hard to toss it out so your store it! What else can you do. I think someday when my sight strats to go these things won't look so bad and people will humer me when they recieve them as gifts. Lol. Most of what you make is beautiful!! But I think I'm with you on this one. I hope that is ok to say. Have a great day.

What is that saying "one mans junk is another mans treasure" I like this one too. The directions of the dots do not bother me at all. Looks like a lovely 'leaded glass' window to me.

How about taking the top and bottom borders off and then slicing the rest horizontally into strips to be used on something else (like more journal quilts?)?

I love this little quilt! To me, the varying direction of the dots gives it a wonderful, chaotic feel.

I don't think this quilt is a total disaster. I think the dot fabric looks like it is woven. The dots go all vertical in one direction and all horizontal in the other direction. I like it. The only thing I may change is the width of the outside borders. I would make them the same width as the sashing in between the blocks. Good luck! Terry

I like that little quilt top. It's so different -- I'd keep it just the way it is! It's sort of a Morse code gone wild top! :-)

I think it's pretty cute too.

So...this is what you do when you make something not beautiful?! You have got to be kidding me :) This is gorgeous. I love that quilt top, I think the dotted fabric adds movement because it is not all directed the same way.. You are funny. LOL!
Seriously, the top is great!

I kinda like this too. I wonder if some pops of color in the borders (buttons, maybe an appliqued color strip in the middle of the border?) would help.

Wanda, you are TOO hard on yourself... this little piece has life and energy and loads of character. If it really bothers you that much, you could send it to me and I'll convert it into a wonderful 9" x 12" Priority Quilt top ... I surely do not see a disaster here, only an opportunity!

Wanda,
You could use this piece as the cover to your journal, or the end.
I like it, the way it is. It's like a series of small paintings on a wall.

Well I like it a lot. I know you had a certain vision but I think it looks great the way it is.

I may have a skewed vision of it, but it has a childlike quality to me.

The little girl in galoshes with an umbrella splashing in the puddles singing "rain rain go away".

I like it.

I like it too! I think you are too critical of your own work. It looks fun, to me.

I like it too. I like Terry's idea of cutting down the borders to the same size as the sashings.(you could fold them back first to see if you like it) You could then add a small border of one batik.

I will take it off your hands if you really hate it!

Wanda, I love this little quilt! It's not technically "perfect" maybe, but is very whimsical and charming! Serendipity-ish! If you hate it, I'll be glad to take it off your hands. Seriously, this is wonderful.

I love the start of your journal quilt. And to me, I think I like the spareness of it, just like it is. Maybe just some plain black sashing between those two pieced rows, or maybe some lovely linen or duipioni (I don't remmeber how to spell that!) silk. Just a thought! Whatever you do, it will be fabulous!

Hi Wanda
Your little quilt is busy, but there is still lots of room for experimenting.
How about playing with some solid-ish batiks as cornerstones, and attach them with a raw-edge applique technique?
All cobalt blue, or fuchsia, or mix it up.
Then you could play with adding some of the same fun colors to the border.
Just a thought.
Put my name on the list if you do decide to give it up!

it's interesting to hear yours and everyone's take on this. i think the randomness of the dots makes it fun. i like the name morse code chaotic. (catherine's thought) so, i'd name it and call it a day!
