Thank you for all of the input yesterday. Several thought I should reverse the darks and lights but with the Radiant 9 patch (which was the original plan 10 years ago when I started it) there are a few lights in the center and lots of mediums and darks around the perimeter. I had less than 40 light blocks and over 300 medium to dark. As far as all of the suggestions that I do applique in the center, well.....it would never get done if I went with that plan, LOL. You haven't seen much applique on my blog. I love looking at it and don't love doing it. BUT it would have been a solution, just not my solution.
I plan on adding a row at each end (left and right) to make it more bed sized. I have leftover parts of blocks so I can piece specific ones that I need. I also have the perfect backing and border already in my stash.**********
They moved Dad's appointment with the surgeon yesterday from 4 p.m to 2 p.m. The Dr. thinks Dad (95 yrs.) should have surgery for the hernia since he is still able to walk around (not bedridden). He has to have a cardiac evaluation first and if he fails that, there will be no surgery. I told the Dr. I was concerned about the anaesthesia and he said he was too. He said it would most likely be a spinal block with an IV sedative. Now my next 4 weeks are in limbo again while we wait for the appointments to be set up.

This is definitely an improvement on the blank centre look. I've been drooling over the pictures of your blocks for days... I'm sad to see that the quilt blocks look so different from a distance when laid out as a top. I think I miss seeing all the pinks together, and the greens together and the mauves together. I guess some of my own biases are showing! Congratulations on getting the UFO back on the go.
This layout is more pleasing than the first. I think you were correct with the first layout being too beige. This one gives it just the right balance. Having seen several radiant 9 patch quilts, I know what you are talking about when you talk about the original plan. But sometimes you just have to deviate. So glad to hear that you were able to discuss the anesthesia with your Dad's doctor. I am sure things will go well.

I hope all goes well with your Dad. I feel badly for him having to deal with this now after your Mother dying not that long ago.
At 95 I would not do any surgery unless it fixes something that has become a major compromise on his life. That is just my opinion and of course you have good doctors and good advice.
Yes, the center is more appealing now. That big blank look is gone but it still has that radiant appearance. I've got several old projects started decades ago, too, that need some tweaking if I ever get interested in them again.
I hope your dad is able to have the surgery. It is such a concern when our elderly loved ones need serious stuff like that to keep their quality of life. I'll think positive thoughts for you and him.

You found a lovely solution for the center of the quilt, Wanda. It has much nicer movement.
It is hard waiting for appointments for our loved ones. I hope that they do not put your father through anything that will cause him or you undue stress.

You give hope to all those vanilla quilters out there.
This is a great layout. I think it is still a beige quilt, even with the bit of color here and there. Another beautiful job! Hope all works out with your dad. Taking care of our parents is not an easy task, is it? Don't forget to take care of yourself as well.

oh my goodness!! I think this is my favorite! It looks like a mosiac. And maybe a little like the pattern the TV makes when the weather isn't so good. It is amazing!
