Making test blocks..........
Sometimes I think a block looks like fun to make and then I find out I don't enjoy making them. I decided to try this one with some batiks that mostly aren't my favorites. This is a stack of six 10" squares with 4 cuts made through them.
Then I shuffled some of the layers. You can also choose to make it a 2 fabric block with the center square being the same fabric as the triangles.
Here are the 6 resulting blocks sewn but not yet pressed or trimmed.
This is the book with the instructions that I am using. I did a search and found there is a You Tube video called Layer em up with Sharyn Craig from June 2009 that demonstrated cutting and sewing this block. The book was published in 2009 and I think it is out of print. She calls this block the X block and mentions that it is also called Old Italian Block among other names. She shows layouts of edge to edge blocks, sashing between blocks, and borders around each block.
I'm going to make 6 more blocks and trim all of them and then decide if I want to make a whole quilt of them with my favorite fabrics.

That is the block that I learned as the "Old Italian" block in a different book. I used several of them in the quilt that I am finishing now.
I have seen this block with a different name but I don't remember what it was -what size block did you end up with?
I have this book and used it once. Instructions are easy to follow and the look is great.
Those are some rich looking colors.
I really love that first block with the purplish fabrics. I'm getting into a purple love now, I think it's because you use purple a great deal and I see how pretty it is.
I recently discovered the Old Italian Block and this cutting method too and have made flimsies for a table topper and a runner. It's a fun block to sew and I love the end result:

I like them separated on your cutting mat, and can see this made up with narrow sashing between. Batiks, my favourites.
rather liking this block a good project for a layer cake. Might just have to cut a few 10" squares and have a go myself
Blocks look great to me. I love both the fabrics/colors, and the pattern! I'd say keep it up if you like it as well. But only if you do. It's yourf quilt!
