I continued cutting small floral squares yesterday. I also decided to try the darkest ones at the edge like a light border and then a darker one. Below is the photo from yesterday where I had them as dark/light alternating. I liked this dark border when I'm looking at the design wall but I'm not sure again when I see it in a photo. In the book they used the dark as the first row around and then the light as the last border. However the dark flowers in the book quilt aren't as dark as mine.

In the top picture the light small squares are lost, and the dark ones seem jarring in their intensity. In the lower photo, the mixed squares create the illusion of 4patch blocks, and also form a sort of border. I quite like the total effect of #2.
I was studying the first photo (before looking at your comments) and thought why not put the lighter border on the outside and the darker border on the inner, to divide them away from the main flowers. I expect you spend a lot of time on your design wall shuffling the fabric around. Whatever you decide it will look beautiful, as always. I've enjoyed looking at your garden flowers the past week - hope you manage to get some nice juicy tomatoes before the animals do :)
I am undecided about this. At first look I like the dark used as the border on the outside. It acts as a way to contain and corral the blooms. It is more controlled version.
The second one is carefree. Some times I realize there is a smaller block border and then the blooms just blend together like a fully blooming summer garden.
So which do you prefer? That is really the point. Me....I want to be carefree and bloom until I can't:)
Hmmm, I can't decide either. I'm not a pro at this and have to rely strictly on how my heart reacts when I see something, my brain reacts too. No reaction to either one as the perfect one. Do your Magic touch Wanda.
I am more drawn to picture #1, but part of me would like to see the light/dark reversed.
My two cents - I like the alternating border more than the light-dark rings around the quilt top.
I like the first photo with the darks forming the outer border - I think it frames the quilt very nicely.
Have to agree with Judy H - I'd like the see the dark and light borders reversed, just to see the difference. But so far I'm loving the first one as the dark border 'frames' the quilt so nicely! You have SUCH a knack for placement of fabrics, colors, etc....I learn something every time I read your blog! Thanks for being so generous in sharing your many bits of knowledge with all of us! Okay...everyone has an opinion. Here is mine. A 1"(finished) inner border of purple, orange or teal, and then the alternating light/ dark border. That way, the border will be set off and not get lost in the business of the quilt center
HMmmm~. Surprised at all the opinions posted today. I have my own opinion but will keep it to myself... you always, always come up with and create the best that show case your fabrics.

The alternating border seems to be a better fit with the larger squares, softer looking than the light then dark border.
A mere novice here, but I do like the darker frame. To me it brings out the centre blooms nicely. I didn't notice the smaller light border! I wonder what it would look like with 3 borders with the light border in between 2 darks?
Prefer the dark/light border, the alternate squares look a mishmash to me, but I would like to see the borders reversed
I like the one where the lights and darks are mixed the best. The light flowers fade into the center and don't look like a separate Border in the one where there is a dark border, you really only see the dark border, and that's a shame, I think.
