Someone on a blog asked how tiny of pieces do you keep. Most of the pieces on the little mini quilts that I make are 1" square or less. I only save batiks that small because they don't ravel as easily or as fast as regular quilting cottons. Most everything in the bag of scraps is considered too small to sew so I just layer them overlapped slightly on fusible batting and then the quilting will hold them in place. I expect them to ravel some as they age. I'm not a fan of using tulle over the top to hold them down. I prefer the textured look of the raw edges on my little pieces of art.

Playing with tiny pieces.......

So cute! I make greeting cards using scraps and leftovers, especially of painted fabric and batiks, but I especially love your colorwash pieces! Well done!
Those mini-colorwash pieces are just so lovely--great idea to fuse them in place--I don't like the tulle overlay either....Julierose
I would agree that there is no problem with raveling edges. I think it adds depth to the piece.
Do you have any problems withthe fusible batting gumming up your sewing machine? What size needle do you use?
I love this picture! To see the creative process happen is so inspiring to me. I've been wanting to dive in and see what happens and this post has got my juices excited.

Now that is my kind of quilting (*._,*). I plan to get some fusible batting today !
I like your new bird feeder. I have had two for years that I can really say that the squirrels can not get into. I will send you the info if you'd like. But they are not as pretty as your wire ball. My squirrels out here literally chewed right through wire cages like that.

Those little minis are looking good!! I've tried that method a couple of times and it's fun! I've never used just batiks though, and think that might be the better route. You have the BEST eye for color!
Great idea! I wouldn't like the tulle over top either.
My local kindergarten and preschool love the tiny bits for their collage work.

Huhmm... gotta dig those tiny pieces of fabric out of the trash bin! :-) I have worked with 1/4" squares, glued to batting and covered with tulle, then quilted. Almost went crazy, though!
Now I won't be throwing anything out. I like the idea of the pictures and also making cards with the scraps on it. Another thing to put on my "to do" list.
