After I sewed all of the purple/green strips, I moved onto the brown/gold orange/yellow group. I have all but 2 sewn together.
Yesterday morning I played with an alternate layout, random rather than all 4 matched squares together.
Here are the 2 layouts side by side, the one on the left, the original layout of all 4 alike together as a group, and on the right, a random layout of the same blocks. Why would I choose one over the other? It is a matter of what size quilt I want to make. The group of 4 together creates a 16" block so multiplying a multiple of 16" might not work out to a size I like. On the other hand, a random layout is an 8" block and the layout can be an uneven number of blocks in both directions if I want. This gives me more possibilities for the quilt's dimensions. I prefer the random layout. I made 2 quilts with this pattern in 2010 and 2008. I used the random layouts with them.
I decided to look in my bin of batik quarter yard or less bin for more purple and green.
I pulled these out and will press them and cut a 2.5" and a 4.5" strip from each of them.

I think the random layout moves the eye around more as well as the practical aspect of the size you want :-) We have about 5-6” of snow as of 5am today.
I like your new pull of colors a lot, Wanda...;)))
No snow as yet here at 6:20 am--[and why oh why am I up so early--I mis-read my watch and by the time I was up and bath-robed I figured why go back to bed!!!] It is still dark out --sunrises at 7:07 here...It reads 9.7 degrees out there so any snow will definitely be staying around...
I am taking a day off from anything "sewing" and resting my hands....
Hugs to stay safe and warm during this storm....Julierose
Yes, the random layout is more interesting as well as easier to put together. Hope you're keeping warm!
You have pulled some beautiful fabrics, Wanda! I've always loved this color combo.
I love the random layout the best too. Extremely cold here in Oklahoma. Helen Reimers
Even if there were no size considerations, the random layout wins my vote. I like the way the diagonals get bolder then recede around the quilt.
I like random layout as well. I have a set of fall batik colors and may use this as a lap quilt.
I like the random layout better, but not by much. The more organized layout is nice, too. Goodie, there will soon be more blocks to add to the mix!!
High today 26*F, low 24*F and our few inches of sugar snow may well be joined by sleet. May the power stay on everywhere!
Hugs!
“Random layout” in 2008 and 2010 are truly beauties . And another one on the way. . . this creation will be as stunning as the other two.
