I decided I need to audition a few more fabrics for the rectangles that will go between the 2.5" little bits squares. I don't like the one in the middle.
I do like the one on the left so I didn't move it and just added another new one to the right.
It won't be this one but I thought I would show it to you anyway. The little squares are just lost on this fabric. You can go back here to see the first 2 fabrics I tried and here to see the third one.
I could hear a lot of noisy birds in my backyard yesterday so I grabbed my camera and went to the window. There were a bunch of robins. I hadn't seen any for the last 2 months so they must be migrating and stopped for a drink.
I got one robin in the first photo and 2 in this photo. They are usually chasing each other out so it was neat to see 2 getting along. Eventually one of them actually took a bath in that little bowl.
Looking up, this is the view from my kitchen window. When the redbud leaves turn yellow they start falling at a fast rate. The tree is about half empty already.
There are 3 zillion seed pods again so I'll have a bunch more trees to dig out next year.

On your first picture, my eyes immediately went to the middle fabric, then I read what you said - "I don't like the one in the middle." I had to smile. I am definitely not 'exuberant color' minded - more 'boring and plain'! That is why I am so drawn to your site and pictures and quilts, I want to be more colorful! Thanks for the dose of daily inspiration!
Like Susan, my eye was also drawn to the middle fabric. Not sure why. Possibly the batik blocks don't appear to be getting lost among the print. Not sure, but I do like the circles as well. We have also had lots of wildlife in our yard just yesterday too. We had a bobcat, 10 wild turkeys, two deer, and a bunny rabbit. It is our own personal zoo.
I love how all three fabrics in the background make your squares float. If I was making this one, I would choose to go with the first layout and use all of them!
Do you think I am crazy?
I too, loved the middle fabric. Maybe the two side fabrics drove my eyes to the centre. When I read that you didn't like it, well, what can I say? Still learning, I guess. I do like the circles on the left.
We had a flock of robins in the backyard a few weeks ago. I haven't seen any since. I guess they are just passing by your place.
i immediately liked the left one :-)
maybe because I like the contrast between the dots and the squares ?
My favorites are the vertical lined fabrics you tried in the first link. I think I like the lighter one best.
Also, I like the polka dots.
Love the big dots and little dots: nice contrast with the rectangular shapes. Love your blog and the inspiration it gives!
I like all three in the top photo but my favorite fabric is the bottom black and white. I love crazy fabrics but working with that one might make your eyes crazy!
I love the one on the left in the top photo. It's my favorite. I think that fabric's design is great and interesting yet it makes the colored little pieces really stand out.
fun reading all of the opinions of likes and dislikes! I like the first photo the fabric on the right.
I have a red bud tree with lots of pods. I am ready to start reaching up there and pull them off and put the pods where I want them. On all this land I only have 2 of them growing but I would like them scattered throughout the woods for spring color.

I also loved the middle fabric in the first picture. Your tree is beautiful, our trees are just beginning to change.
Top right would be my pick....paper clips holding all the pieces of the squares together!! Loved the coordination of fabrics yesterday !
I liked the one on the left...and I love your photos...they are georgeous
I think I would use more than one background--either starting with a lighter background and making a middle square of them, then a medium background in a frame around the square, then a darker frame around it, or the reverse, going dark to light. Or some other simple arrangement that I could use two or three different backgrounds on. Hope that makes sense. Good luck with your decisions!
My favorite continues to be the black-on-white vertical lines from the first post. Whatever you choose will be fabulous!
I love the one on the left. That is a fabulous piece of fabric.
I do like the dots and textural circles - gives a new contrast to the squares. Terri
I like the right one in the second picture. It will be fun to see which one you choose!
My favorite so far is the one on the left in the top photo.
I really like the third choice you showed earlier -- and the one on the left in this post. The one in this post is interesting with the circles -- nice change from the straight lines in the blocks.
Whatever you choose, it's going to be a fun quilt!
I liked the middle one too - but don't listen to us, go with your choice, your instincts are great!
I liek the dotted black and white too - and the paperclip print!! I am sure you'll find the perfect print to use, you always do ;)
I like the fabric on the left best too!
I vote for the one with the small to large gradation dots in a previous post. The gradation creates a vertical line and the circles are a nice contrast to the size and the shape of the colorful little blocks.

How big are you going to make this,or is this one of your pet small projects ? I think that would be the way to determine what the background will be.
LOL! I thought the one in the middle in your first photograph showed off the colorful blocks the best. :-) I think my second choice would be the big polka dots. I know whatever you ultimately choose, it's going to look wonderful though.
I vote for the one in the middle too !
I do like the dots, in fact used in a quilt for my daughters wedding gift, but I don't think that it shows off the little squares as well, it gets too busy. Interesting to see the variety of opinions, though.
Wouldn't our quilting world be boring if we all preferred the same things and all gravitated toward the same choices?
How interesting to read everyone's comments. For the record, my preference is the fabric on the left.
I picked up a fabric today that could also work for this... it was a Patrick Lose of black swirls (like my 2 year old would make) on white.
I agree the dots are interesting however, in the photo a couple of days ago the solid darkish background seem to make the blocks shine.
I think I like the fabric on the left in the first photo best. The contrast of the colored squares against the black and white circles is perfect. But I also like the paperclip fabric with the colored squares. Where will you end up? We are all waiting for your decision - lol!
Plain and simple - I agree with your choices - especially like the left one with gray circles and black dots. Seem to have the right 'flavor'. 8-))
I like the cirle print, the grey and black add interest and the circular vs the strip piecing is a nice contrast. Hope you had a nice visit with your friends!
