Still making blocks

I finished 2 more blocks and the other 8 are still partial blocks. I need to cut some more dark strips before I can finish. For those who are wondering (and those who have asked), my daughter loved her birthday quilt and it looks great in her bedroom.

This morning I am doing a private class at the sewing machine store for a young gentleman who wants to learn to sew so he can make Civil War uniforms for the guys who do the re-enactments of the war. I gave him a lesson last Saturday and he is just getting used to a machine and seam allowances. He set in a 2 piece sleeve last week so he learned about easing. He was using felt for his first project and he has a new garment cut out for this week. I hope it is a woven fabric this time.

as always, your blocks delight. You are using some of my absolute favorite Kaffee fabrics!

Some people are fearless -- taking up sewing to sew authentic reproduction clothing! And starting out on that!

After a lifetime of sewing, and 9 years of life in the costuming dungeons of theatre, my heart goes out to both of you. I've been behind the teacher mask, and I've worn that of the endless student of the perpetual seam ripper. He has the heart for it, now it's up to you to work those hands ;)You're both lucky he's not doing the Elizabethan era...ha!

How exciting! My boys all learned to sew when they were young. It has come in handy for them. At the time they were learning I belive they were more interested in the mechanics of the machine at the time.

II just taught my 35 year old son how to use the sewing machine. He's made a lot of small Christmas ornaments already and tackled using a pattern to make a Halloween costume. It sure surprised me.

Well done to you both doing costumes. My daughter is in an re-enactment groupcalled Grey Company. She makes all sorts of costumes from Viking,Elizabethan and beyond. Her DH makes chainmail swords and shields, they love it.

I've finished my S blocks, but now I'm convinced I have to do the log cabin next. I can't take my eyes off your blocks! They just sing to me.

Lovely, lovely blocks!

Your log cabin blocks are an inspiration to me! Happy teaching! With all my sewing experience I don't think I could every make a Civil War uniform. I wish both of you all the luck in the world!

Hi Wanda,
Your blocks are looking good. Sounds like you are making more blocks than the one in the book.

That's very cool someone wants to learn sewing. I think project Runway is having an influence. All I can think of for Civil War uniforms is lots and lots of pieces (epaulets, pockets, flaps, etc.)

I think I told you that William took a costuming class this semester. Once he learned to use a needle threader, he went on to machine and serger sewing. He made a wonderful satchel, fully lined and covered with separately stitched exterior pockets. I'm so impressed. I couldn't manage such a feat!

I sure enjoy looking at more of your blocks that frame those blossoms. Just makes the blossoms 'pop'.

I knew your daughter would love her birhtday quilt.

Did your student purchase one of those nice computerized machines at the store ?

Wanda-Love it, love it, love it, I think I'm going to have to find time to make one now....it is coming along beautifully. I think I recognize a lot of those prints. BTW, this week I received in all the new Kaffe Fassett fabric collection in {except for 4 bolts} and it is georgeous. Stop by the etsy shop if you get a chance and check them out.

The blocks look amazing.

How wonderful to have a guy who is prepared to leard to "drive" a sewing machine, rather than looking for someone else's wife/girlfriend/mother to do it for him. I hope the lesson went well?
