Quilt top inventory..............

It was time to see where I am with quilt tops waiting to be quilted.  I'm starting this year with 32 quilt tops of various sizes.  That is up 6 from last year because I created more new ones than the number I finished.  I also found one that wasn't on last year's list.

In 2015 and 2016 I had 50 at the beginning of the year and in 2017 there were 40.  The 26 that I started last year with was the lowest number I have had in many years.

Half of the quilt tops are in the large category which for me is 80" or longer on the longest edge.
I decided I should start early on finishing by having one basted at all times.  I won't baste a bunch at once because I never fold them after they are basted.  They will get wrinkled at the fold mark if I do.  I like them to stay perfectly flat after they are basted.  It will be harder to procrastinate about quilting when one is ready to go.....at least I hope that is true!

Happy New Year.... a day or so late... If wasn't late... I wouldn't get anything done lately. My last blog post was on how much I didn't get done creatively in 2018, although I did get a ton of time on the Internet!!! I'm going to try and do more creating this year! You were certainly busy too!

That is a lot of quilt tops that need finished although you have done great by reducing the number. If you would put some for sale your could reduce the number real quick! LOL!!! I know I need to try and get some of mine quilted this year. I did end up giving away a couple quilts for Christmas, but that didn't even put a dent in the pile of finished quilts I have.

love that one laying on your basting table! the colors are so bright and pretty - you have a lot in your quilting closet to do and maybe some would buy tops more quickly then finished? But I imagine you aren't sure what all you want to do with them yet so have them hanging until you decide

Oh to have a basement or at least another room! This weekend I went through my hoarded Christmas fabric and started cutting up fabric for quilts. At least for the beginning of the year I will be surrounded by Santas, reindeer, and snowflakes. I still have a lot of fat quarters and half yards that are ironed (I ironed it all) and I'm thinking about hanging them for the next month while I consider what to do with the rest (cut more or re-store). I was slightly embarrassed when I realized how much I had but slightly excited on how many quilts I got cut (my least favorite part). Now they're in bins ready to grab for sew days and that makes me slightly giddy.

Such a beautiful array of color. The one that intrigues me, is the longest one, with, what looks like a dark polka dotted fabric.

That makes me feel much better about the 14 I have. My sister in law just got a long arm so I sent 2 wall hanging size ones home with her.

What a collection! The number to start is down and that is great because you are moving ahead. Keeping one ready to quilt is a great goal. I need to remember that:)

I would like to see the quilts tops pictured. Maybe we could give ideas on which one to quilt next!! I like the blogger that is sewing and quilting with Santa’s now....I usually sew out of season !!!!

It looks like you have a lot of work ahead of you. Keeping count is a bit terrifying for me and I know that I don't have as many as you do. lol

That's a great idea! No excuse to procrastinate if you always have one basted and ready to go - ;))

Being organized... good for you! I'm curious though about the basting. Do you baste quilts that are going on your long-arm? I have been under the impression that many of your beauties get quilting on that machine which generally requires no basting???

Your quilts all look so great there on hangers. Once I learned quilts could be stored on hangers, I wound up starting a flimsy collection. Hoping to make a dent to that collection now that my sewing machine is cooperating with the quilting. Your plan to always have one ready is a good one. I think the basting is probably the part that would slow me down.

Just realizing that you hand baste your quilts and then long arm them? Would you please let us know the advantage of doing this? The instructions I've follow for long arm quilting just baste the edges and down the center with the machine. No hand basting.
thanks for answer.

That is amazing! I don’t recall ever before reading about this inventory; and certainly had no idea there were quite that many. I would be so tempted so send some out for quilting if I were you, but I suppose you’ve had luck selling some plain tops, so you don’t necessarily ever have to quilt them all. I just can’t ever imagine having finished tops hanging around like that. But each to her own. I wish you luck in making progress in that area and look forward to seeing what beauty emerges as you unfold them.
I’ve also been meaning to say that I was so glad you decided to keep that lovely reddish quilt you finished recently for yourself. It was so calm and pretty, and I’m glad you get to keep something every now and then!
I often keep my finished quilts around, sometimes for a couple of years, before I’m ready to give them away. It’s nice to enjoy them for a while, and then it’s easy to let them go. Others, which I make specifically for somebody or an occasion, I have to give away immediately, and then I just enjoy when/if I get to visit them occasionally.

I have never hung my flimsys , I thought they would stretch. What are your thoughts on this?
