Sorting system
The mess on the table eventually got to me so I went to the basement for my sorting rack. We rented for 11 years before buying a house and the rental houses had very little closet space. I bought 2 of these pants racks back in the 1960's. I gave the other one to someone years ago but kept this one, just in case I would need it.
I sort the strips from dark at one end to light at the other.
I'm still making blocks in between cleaning the basement for my art quilters on Monday and cleaning off all flat surfaces in the house. If every surface had a slight tilt to it would we not be pilers? Or would we just use the floor to pile on?

What a clever way to sort - and today people would say it is green (not the color but repurposing what you have)!
The moral of the story? Never throw anything away because next week you are sure to find a use for it!

Pants rack looks brand new and sturdy too. You could not replace that rack today. And those fabrics all lined up ready for production... I can visualize your quilt already.

What a neat rack. I've one that I use to dry clothes that has similar spacing... never thought to use it for this. Thanks for a great idea.

What a handy gadget! I remember those old pulley washing lines, that hung from the ceilings, back in the day, & were used for airing off the washing in huge old farm kitchens. That is whay I need in my sewing room! LOL.
A fantastic way to sort. I love it. I have also heard that pants/skirt hangers, the kind with the clips also works well. never tried it though. But yours seems to be quite handy and on wheels too!
I started out with a similar system on a clothes rack but now the whole thing is just a huge swaying pile. I need to get at it like you did.
If every surface had a slant here, I would have table boards running between the high sides and the low sides....*L*..and stuff all piled on that
Oh....I'd find a way to still do piles if the surfaces were all slanted...have no fear!!! Good idea to use that pants rack for sorting.
I already do have piles on the floor...stuff to take to goodwill, fabric I need to fold and put away, chenille waiting to be dyed, bolts of fabric, well, you get the picture! I LOVE the clever sorting rack. I would get one for myself but where would I put it?

What a fantastic way to sort fabrics! I pile on everything, level or not. I even pile on top of piles!
What a fabulous way to sort the fabrics! I have an old wooden clotheshorse that I use sometimes to hold fabrics when I'm trying colour combination ideas. Unfortunately, the cats think anything hanging like that is a toy.
Just so you know. I live in a tilty house. Everything is piled on the floor.

Pants rack as strip sorter -- very clever. That could come in handy for rows of quilt blocks as they are sewn (rather than laying them on the floor and having my cat "rearrange" them).

Marvelous re-purposing! Does it happen to fold down when not in use? The brain cells are hard at work here contemplating how to implement this genius concept in my work area....
