I continued to clean off the cutting table in my main floor studio and uncovered the cutting mat, which inspired me to cut something.
On the table top I found some strips of batiks 2.5" x 8.5" so I paired them and sewed them and then trimmed them into 2.5" segments. This made 21 four patches which I sewed while I had TV time in the evening. No plans for them, just some sewing therapy.
I also found a box of 2.5" squares so I paired up 4 of one fabric with 5 of another fabric for 9 patches. I'll probably sew them tonight while I watch TV. The box now contains 1 - 4 pieces of lots of fabrics that will probably remain in the box for the time being.
I checked out my black raspberry canes and they have the beginnings of the fruit. I only learned the difference between black raspberries and blackberries a few years ago and maybe most of you already know. Black raspberries pull off of a core which leaves them hollow like red raspberries. Blackberries on the other hand pull off their stem as a complete rounded berry.
Here is another view farther down the cane.
My 2 potted Coral Bells made it through another winter in the pots. I might put them in the ground this summer because they are probably root bound in the pots.
I dug out the Hosta in the front flower bed that is going to get re-done and gave a friend 3 pieces that I pulled off of it and I put the remaining 2 pieces in pots for the time being. In the pink pot is another Coral Bell.
The Weigela buds are starting to open. The bush is so gangly and unattractive in its shape but the blooms are so spectacular. I will trim it back after blooming.
I'll share some growing things from the backyard tomorrow
Is your Weigela in shade or sun? I want to find something that blooms in all shade, any idea?
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on Weigela. Let me know how you prune it.
ReplyDeleteI really like the four patches. I could see sewing them together with some medium solid fabric on one color to bring them all together. It would make a cute baby quilt. I am so glad you black raspberries are coming back. The fruit will be a wonderful treat!
ReplyDeleteI love four patches and nine patches - so simple but so versatile.
ReplyDeleteI love how your four patches came together! As you know, squares are my favorite thing to sew up...I am pondering how to use my 5" squares without cutting them up...we shall see how that goes...
ReplyDeleteWe did some planting this morning: 2 apple trees and i have some White French Lilacs on order...and some Nellie Stevens Hollies for our new fence....
Spring is such a hopeful time;)))

It's amazing how when we clean and have a fresh cleared surface to work on, we get inspired to get busy and create something new :) Clean surfaces demand getting messy, LOL.
ReplyDeleteHi Wanda,
ReplyDeleteIsn't the weather glorious today? We are getting a new roof so the weather is perfect for that. I love your 4-patches, love quilts with an alternate block - it that's what you end up doing. Scrap happy! Take care, Wanda!
We called the small round black raspberries black caps when I was young. My father an I would go out in the country and find large patches of them and picked enough for eating fresh and freezing. All those places are gone now due to development. I used to have a small patch in the far back of our yard, but the canes are deer candy, so the patch eventually died out.
