First big finish for June 2018

I decided to do the binding all by machine on the Australian triangles quilt so it became a finish faster.  It ended up 57.5" x 79" after quilting.  I'm usually trying for something near 60" x 80" for my throw quilts; long enough for a tall person and wide enough to wrap up in.

I have started on the hand sewing of the purple binding.  I have part of one short side done.  This one is 61" x 88" so it could be thrown over a twin bed as an extra cover.

I noticed the one Coral Bell plant has many different color leaves.  So pretty!

  1. Your quilt is very striking, I especially like the squares of one print. The Coral Bells are so pretty I’m stopping on my home from church to get a few, I love this one.

  2. Those HSTs look fabulous. The colors in the leaves would make a great quilt. I love the variety all in one plant.

  3. The plant looks like a Kaffe print. The big finish looks terrific. I also like to make my quilts for someone to wrap up in. I machine bind every thing as I figure everything else is machined, why not the binding. I think it is stronger. I sew it on the front, pull to the back and stitch it in the seam or close to it on the front. Now you are ready to work on something new!

  5. Nothing like a finished quilt. Your design for the Australian triangles is a huge compliment to the designer(s) of each piece of that fabric.

In your opinion is a hand stitch finish on the binding, stronger than machine finish ? A hundred years ago when in college, we had to design and tailor a garment and stitch all seams by hand. No machine stitches allowed. I do not recall if our instructor mentioned the strength of either. But I do remember we had to use the 'back stitch' method for stitching. I'm only curious now since Linda S. felt machine stitches were stronger.

Your Coral Bell is indeed a lovely array of colors, no one can compete with Mother Nature.

  6. Congratulations on your big finishes! The randomness of the half square triangles is stunning and the full squares are full of movement. You're on a roll - the binding will go quickly on the two quilts.

  7. Inspired idea to add those large squares into the mix, a beautiful quilt.

  8. The quilt turned out beautiful! I love your cora bell - so pretty! I only have the common type with the green leaves, but they were free so I am not complaining.

  9. The triangle quilt is stunning, but I'm a purple lover and the backing for the purple quilt is perfect.
We finally got much needed rain on Sunday 1.5" spread out throughout the day so it could soak in. So today with a high of only 70° will be a weeding day.
