My favorite double design wall was empty yesterday so I put the 6 rows that were stacked back up and then added the other 6 rows, changing a few pieces in the first half for variety. I thought I was done, that this was the final layout. Then in the photo I could see 3 darks in a row, vertical rows 7, 8, and 9 piece 6 going across. I sewed 7 vertical seams last night and flip flopped pieces 6 and 7 in row 8. I'll sew the last 4 rows on today and see how it looks.
This quilt top is sewn, all Marcia Derse fabrics from many years of her lines. It is 72" x 91.5". It is so much prettier than this photo.
The close up shots capture the intensity of the colors better than the full view.
I have enough of the purple print with red bullseye circles to make the backing for the quilt.
I think it is real hard to layout a quilt so it looks even and random. That is why I resort too often to light/dark alternating. Takes a lot of time on the design wall to do what you do.
ReplyDeleteI love the triangles, especially the thin grey line in addition to the white. It just grabs me. I am wondering how a triangle quilt with all the recycled denim I save would look with this type of sashing. Hmm.
Your Marcia Derse quilt is gorgeous - you must be really happy with it.
ReplyDeleteLove both tops even though they are sew different.. The pink is soft and pretty and I really love the brights in the triangle top....
ReplyDeleteLove the pinks! I do not have a design wall, but I do always take pictures...it is amazing that I can look at the pieced blocks and not see something that I notice immediately in a picture!! It is a step I never omit, and I think one well worth the time.... Once I view the picture on my iPad, I can make any needed changes right away, and move on....
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to seeing if you do decide to use the red fabric for backing the triangle quilt.....

Thanks for the close ups of the triangle fabrics. Beautiful. Lots of movement. The sea of pink is lovely. Small break in hotness this am. Have to walk the dogs early.
ReplyDeleteThe Marcia Derse quilt is inspiring! I am "sitting on" all those MD fabrics acquired in our recent trade (plus a few more I just had to acquire) and they have been an interesting challenge to my more traditional quilting mentality. The close-ups really help, but the overall view is simply a wonderful lesson in design!!!
ReplyDeleteYour quilt tops are very beautiful, love both and so different from each other. I love my design walls, I am so grateful you showed me how to make them. Sometimes I have a quilt on the wall for days changing things around until I am satisfied with it.
ReplyDeleteThe triangle top is really lovely. The Marcia Derse fabrics are bright yet sophisticated. Did you use a template to cut the pieces, or one of the measurement lines on a straight ruler?
ReplyDeleteI do so wish I was stitching instead of packing up ready for decorating the walls. I love your triangles best and I have never ever seen Marcia Derse fabrics here in England. I must look out for them at the big Festival of Quilts show in a few weeks time.

Well, you know which of these is my favorite! :) (That's a whole lotta pink!)
ReplyDeleteSomeone once pointed out that "random" might mean that you get, say, 12 dark blues in a row followed by three light blues followed by four mediums .... that is, "random" may not be "pleasing." That said, your pinks look nicely-distributed, which is what you're after. (And I am still most intrigued/impressed by the triangles.)
ReplyDeleteYour Marcia Derse fabrics are wonderful. Great quilt. The white and pink quilt is looking good as well.
ReplyDeleteA tour through past blogs always brightens my day. Pink squares piece is so gentle and soothing, then come your Marcia Derse piece, a grand presentation of 'exuberant' Wanda color ! I love both...Add to that 'Colorburst' pieces are an explosion of color like non other. Both pieces just dance off the screen.
ReplyDeleteYour wonderful blooming garden flowers and your view out your kitchen window looks like a lovely Hallmark greeting card.
Enjoy your ArtQuilters tomorrow ~ JJM
I love both of these quilts a lot! When I grow up, I wish I could be as productive as you are, and not "waste" so much of my time reading, surfing the web, trolling Facebook, and whatever useless stuff I do which keep me from sitting down and just sewing!
