More recycled jeans.........

This is the layout for the next recycled jeans and flannel and corduroy scraps quilt.  There are scraps from 3 flannel shirts that I made about 15 years ago.  The corduroy scraps are from clothes for my granddaughters.  This quilt is all about recycling instead of dumping in a landfill.  I know people who throw away big chunks of fabric.  I can't do it.  I love the flannel and denim together.  I was a farm girl with 2 brothers.  That is what we wore as children.  Actually it's still my favorite wardrobe around the house in the winter.
Since I had trouble with the last quilt like this, I decided to take time to open the seams and zig zag over them with gray thread before I sew the cross seams.  I will also open and zig zag over the cross seams.  This should make it easier to quilt.
It seems that almost everyone thought the quilt yesterday should have 3 borders.  That is probably what I will do but I'll hang it all on a design wall so I can double check and make sure I like my choices of fabric.

  1. Farm girls know how to stay warm and comfortable. The scrap quilt will be great for weekends on the couch. Chris

  2. Love the idea of using flannels and denim. Over the past 3 or so years, I have been keeping every pair of denim jeans that was being discarded. I've cut most of them up for a potential quilt. Did some cute things with the pockets. Gave the metal zippers to a friend who loves to work with metal. Nothing like mixing recycling and art!

  3. Thanks for the great tips on using denim in quilts. I'm just starting to cut my hubby's old jeans to make a tailgating quilt. I'm definitely going to try your tip for the seams! Are you using 1/4 inch or 1/2 seams? I was leaning towards 1/2 inch since the denim is so heavy. . .

  4. Your upcycled quilt will be lovely. I too hate the thought of good fabric sitting in a landfill.

  6. I love the flannels and denim together, so cozy! And that pop of orange makes it.
I have to live with my options for a while to before I decide.

  8. I know what you mean about things going to the landfill. I hate that too. I just finished a flannel quilt and am working on another one using someone elses discarded fabrics. Yours looks great!

  10. I am collecting denim shirts for a quilt like this, but have been concerned about the bulky seams and the quilting issues over them. (May start collecting flannel shirts, too.) Dawnmarie asked a good question. Do you use a larger seam than 1/4" to piece these quilts. The zigzag over the seams is a good idea I had not thought of ... what zigzag stitch width do you use?
Thank you for posting about this type quilt. It would be a hit in my family.

  11. Oops. Curious about the square sizes you like to cut and the quilt sizes you like to make when you work with these type fabrics? They look heavy but WARM.

  12. I like this quilt a lot. It is totally utilitarian with lots of memories.
I may be getting ahead of the story here. What do you plan to use for backing and batting for this quilt? I made an all corduroy top. (You can find it in my blog - November 11/11 post.) I am still trying to figure out the best way to finish it up. I used corduroy of different weights, so I am thinking I need to batt it. Also, I am thinking of on big stitch hand quilting. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  13. Denim, flannel, corduroy... what more could we ask for on this cool day ? As always you have a nice selection of fabrics. Love the plaids.

I was not a farm girl... but I am an old lady from the '50's' era and still wear 'jeans' every single day around the house. I do have my 'go to town jeans' also.
