Auditioning blocks...........

I audition my blocks by cutting a 4.5" strip of the 2 fabrics that will be top and bottom and then cut them at 12.5".  Next I lay narrow strips across them until I find one I like and then cut the wide strip at a random spot and sew in the narrow strip. Then it is trimmed to 4.5" wide.  The strip that I trim off might be used in another block.  These directions are not in the books, they are how I work.  I might find 3-4 strips I can sew together to be at least 4.5" wide too.  All auditioning is done on my cutting mat.

All of these narrow strips are just laying on top of the 4.5" wide strips.  I haven't made the final decisions yet.

Snow is predicted for this afternoon and some areas will get "raining snow" according to one weather forecaster.  Some people may get none.  I don't know whether to be excited or depressed.

  1. Thank you so much for sharing your processes. I found a knitted version in one of his knitting books, and am itching to try a block or two in both mediums as soon as time allows.

  3. I like your process of auditioning. Thank you for sharing. We are having RAIN--the "storm" is called "The Pineapple Express". It comes from Hawaii and slams into WA for days at a time.

  4. There is a lot of fiddling around, but the resulting blocks are beautiful! It sure is a great way to use up those odd strips.

  5. Great auditioning idea, Wanda..the maroons/reds with the light blue strip is really a nice pairing.
We have 70 percent chance of rain today and it is warmish--61 degrees [at 8:30 a,m,] already. Leaves are falling fast now...soon we will be in the Bare trees Winter scenery...

  9. Thanks for sharing the process of creating one of these gorgeous blocks. It may be "raining snow" today, but every day it's "raining creativity", thanks to your generosity in blogging.

  10. I agree with Marnie! Thanks for the "rain" of your creativity, inspiration, and talent with colors that you share! And I am hoping for a lot of snow this winter (central IL)....if it's going to be gray skies and bares trees and brown grass, the snow is much prettier!

  11. Today is November 12th. I live in West Michigan on the shores of Lake Michigan. We had rain with ice blobs today, the kind that splotch on the windshield; the wind is roaring, and most of the oak leaves are finally falling into a thick wet blanket on the ground. I was excited about snowfall and winter coming for about 32 seconds, and then reality struck. Let the good times roll!
