This quilt pattern is from Moda and called Simply Woven. This one is 48" x 60". While I was pressing the top I also pressed the backing, cut and seamed it and also cut the same fabric for the binding. Maybe this will be the first finish for November.
I should have gone straight from that to finishing something else but instead I did some research on a new project. Nancy from Blogging, Near Philadelphia gave me permission to start this one. Check out her post where she is starting her fourth quilt in this pattern. It was in Kaffe's 1997 book and then in 2 books following that. I have always liked this pattern and seeing her new blocks prompted me to get serious about it now.
I wasn't sure what fabrics to use and then I saw one through an internet search made with Marcia Derse fabric. Many years ago when I bought my friend's MD fabric stash (older lines that I didn't have) she included some strips she had cut. I went straight to that box to start piecing some strip sets.
I am not sure what I'm doing so far and will get into my stash and cut wider strips and then start playing. I might wait until the first of November and use these last 3 days of October to finish something.
I got a new bird feeder (center) to replace an aging one. It has 6 openings for the birds and I think it will be too slippery for the squirrels or chipmunks to hang onto. I also got the baffle hanging on the post between the 2 left feeders to discourage a trip up the pole by the critters. I know they can still jump that high but hope they will have a harder time raiding the feeders.
Good job getting that woven top done! I like the contrast in that Kaffe quilt of the checkerboard blocks with the ones with a square in the center. It looks like it will be a fun quilt to make especially in MD fabrics!
ReplyDeleteyour bird feeder photo reminds me to get my bird feeders out and clean them and ready to hang. The lattice top sure looks complicated but I'm sure when broken down into blocks it is much easier than it looks.
ReplyDeleteGood morning, Wanda,
ReplyDeleteYou surely are on a roll. As always, your work is inspiring. Thanks for your daily dose of stick-to-it-ness and creativity! Marnie
I, too, was inspired by Nancy’s post and happily discovered I have both of Kaffe’s books with the Gridlock design in them. And, as hard as it may be to believe, my first thought for fabrics was my Marcia Derse stash! Mine is slated for early 2022 after I finish the things I have promised myself I will complete by 12/31/21.
ReplyDeleteThe finished Simply Woven top came out really nice. I downloaded their pattern, as it seems a good use for leftover 2.5" random strips (and a good winter project). Along with all the other projects-in-waiting, of course!
ReplyDeleteI also bought a new bird feeder... a local bird-supply store gave a 20% discount on new feeders if you traded in an old one, so I went over with a squirrel-battered, paint-chipped feeder and have a nice new streamlined "squirrel-resistant" one. We'll see how that goes. I think the bears have mostly retired to their winter lairs by now, so I'll fill and hang it this weekend.
Just a lovely Woven" quilt finish...nice work I hope your weekend is restful and fun hugs, Julierose
ReplyDeleteWe use a piece of downspout slipped over the feeder posts. It's too big and slippery for the squirrels to get a grip and too tall for them to jump over. Pretty it is not, but it works. So far.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to seeing the woven quilt finished up and the new one with Marcia Derse fabrics come together. I keep looking at her fabrics in store, but they are so different from anything I have, so I don't buy. With no room on the shelves for more fabric, it's probably good that I have no idea what I'd make with them.
I love that quilt pattern! I'm guessing that since it's from a Kaffe book, it's not made from strip sets. Are you planning on doing it that way, or are you going for a bit of that hombre effect in the blocks and more of a manual construction?
ReplyDeleteI need to dig out my books and take a closer look at this one.
Simply Woven is simply lovely !
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to your next MD quit top, I know you will create another beauty using your fabric stash.
We too enjoy our birds and have several feeders…. And I toss out a scoop under the feeders for my lil California quail with that cute little feather that dangles from its head. Plus I am feeding a little orphan fawn, that lost its mom from crossing the highway when it was so tiny. She is still tiny for this years fawns. We have lots of deer in our yard every day and have fenced off all foliage that need protection. But I feel so sorry for this little one .

Simply Woven has turned out beautifully, a striking pattern. I'm interested to see your start with a Gridlock quilt, always a winner in the colourways in KF books, I'll go over to Blogging, Near Philadelphia and read her post.
ReplyDeleteI'm following with interest your Marcia Derse Gridlock. While I've always admired her fabrics, I haven't become deeply involved with them. And, interestingly, I've never used strip sets for the checkerboard blocks in a Gridlock. I cut lots of 2.5 squares and lay them out one at a time to make those blocks!
ReplyDeleteYour Simply Woven quilt is fabulous. I may have to try that as I have so many strips in my stash! Thanks for sharing about the Gridlick quilts. Looks interesting to make and will look in Kaffe’s books for them. Always inspired by your work!
ReplyDeleteI love your Simply Woven top. The Gridlock quilt looks like a fun one too. Looking forward to seeing your version. Good luck with those pesky squirrels.
