An unsettling day.................

Because of the 9:30 a.m. severe windstorm I was without TV and Internet most of the day yesterday.  We only got a quarter inch of rain with the wind.  By afternoon I decided the studio was the best place for me.  I cut the cornerstones and finished sewing all of the sashing and finished this little baby quilt top.  I really love it and hope a baby finds it "interesting".  It is 41.25" square so if I'm careful I can use one width of fabric for the back.

The cornerstones are black with purple dots and are 1 1/4" square.

If you missed my second post yesterday this huge branch broke of a Redbud tree and landed about 6' from my kitchen window.

If you look up near the top of the tree you can see the breakoff point.  It's quite amusing that with all of the dead branches on my trees, a live section breaks off.

There was one big dead branch that fell.  That is one less that I have to pay to have removed.

The other part of the walnut tree (the first part fell in my yard 2 weeks ago) fell to the north and is leaning on the neighbor's only Redbud tree.

This piece didn't have any roots either, just grew off the stump of the original tree that was cut down in 2011.  It's going to leave a hole about a foot deep when this part gets removed.

As far as the severe storms that were predicted for last night, we only had a tiny bit of rain by 11 p.m.  I'll check this morning for the amount in my rain gauge.

  2. I am glad you didn't lose power so you could still sew. That baby quilt is so darn cute! My goodness you have had a time of it with falling trees! At least no property damage resulted except for a hole that needs filled. I had a burst of wind yesterday late afternoon that I thought was going to blow the neighborhood away. Thank goodness it only lasted about 10 minutes. About .3 of an inch of rain fell which meant I didn't have to go water again.

  4. Love the baby quilt. Would make a great wall hanging also. Hopefully, the storms will give way to better weather.

  5. You've certainly had more than your share of wind damage. Wonder how long it will take your neighbor to remove the tree now that's it's on his property. We've had threats of severe storms the last few days, but only a short t-storm and a trace of rain so far.
The sharks teeth sashing makes that baby quilt very modern looking.

  6. So glad that tree didn't fall your way this time! I try to keep my baby quilts small enough to fit on a width of fabric, too.

  7. That is a beautiful baby quilt!
So sorry about the winds - I'm not a fan of huge winds and it looks like you had more than your share!

  8. Yesterday afternoon/evening thunderstorms went just north of us. Again. So, this morning I'll be out watering what didn't get watered Tuesday. After living in this house for 18 years, I'm not surprised any more when live branches come down before the dead ones. The dead branches have far less wind resistance because of no leaves. I'm glad that 2nd walnut didn't go your direction.

I *like* the new baby quilt! Such a nice change from the pastels normally seen.

  9. That baby quilt top is deceptively simple but oh so very interesting to study! I agree that storm damage to trees can indeed seem pretty random. Glad that remaining trunk fell away from you!

  10. I love the baby quilt. I have made some nice cute pastel lamb and duck and bunny quilts in the past for babies. I think your design is so much better. It will keep babies interested in looking at the various shapes and colors. Great job. Sorry about the wind damage.

  11. so glad you didn't get more damage. Having that big tree removed will be a job, but maybe someone would like it for the fact that it is walnut. My husband does woodworking and that has become both scarce and expensive. congrats on your clean up in your studio. I know it is a huge job!

  12. Love the baby quilt, but so sorry about the destruction. It is always sad when a tree is lost. Then again happy that your window was spared.
Keep smiling . . . even when is hard :)

  13. Sounds like Sandwich got caught in the edges of a tornado. My sister said the winds were horrid. Of all the trees, I was surprised that a Walnut tree had ‘suckers’.

I agree with everyone else this quilt for baby is so unique for some very lucky baby. It is a lovely piece, Wanda.

  14. When I saw the photo of the baby quilt I thought you had done curved edges! Of course just an optical illusion from the sharks teeth. I love how it turned out :)

  15. We had a bad storm last nite and hydro off for about 6 hours. Severe winds and rain but all ok. Almost like a mini hurricane. Sandwiches for supper-better than cooking! Lol

  17. Love those shark teeth sashings!
We got our incredible windstorm at 6 this morning, power went out and may be up by 11:30 tonight. We lost a large sycamore that split in two, with the top half supported by falling on the nearby oaks. The tree was almost completely hollow! Still growing though. Many many trees down in our neighborhood. The saws were working all day. This has been a crazy weather year everywhere!

  18. You've certainly had your fair share of falling trees! Hope all settled now following the stormy weather. I love the baby quilt, I can picture a little one tracing a finger along all the wavy Sharks Teeth sashing.
