I was working in the basement and the Kaffe orphan block box was sitting on one of my tables. I just had to play with the left over blocks and see how many are the same size. Five of the blocks are 14" square. The sixth would be made of the 3 small 7" Bear Paw blocks and the H block needs to be trimmed 1/2" to fill in the last spot.
This was pure play. This could be the start of an orphan block quilt, or......I could make some more 14" Bear Paws and more of the alternate block and make a small throw quilt. Just fun, relaxing play for a Sunday.
I got 3 of the Friendship Star blocks sewn while watching some remodeling on HGTV.
This is a selection of Kathy Doughty (Australia) fabric. I have most of her books and have made several quilts with her directions. Her fabric hasn't been widely available here in the US so when I found some on sale in the last 3 years I bought it. I found some of her new line at equilter and I had a gift certificate so I got some half yards. It all goes pretty well together even though it is from several different lines of her fabric. The purple in the center is the only one I might pull out. Then I would add a few other fabrics for a nice group to work from. I think some of Kaffe's Aboriginal Dots would work well with it.
Lovely selection of "orphan" blocks--
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen KD's fabric lines; they are very interesting...
Have fun playing hugs, Julierose
Nice parade of orphan blocks. Those fabrics are wonderful, I have never seen them. Rain yesterday and today everything is popping out- leaves, flowers, wow.
ReplyDeleteA play day looks like SEW much fun, Wanda!!
ReplyDeleteYou have so many options for those orphan blocks. You could just set them aside until you get a few more orphan blocks to add to these. Love your Australian prints. I have a few pieces my brother bought for me when he was in Australia years ago. I have never done anything with them. I almost need to buy a few more pieces of Australian fabric to go with them. I will be very interested to see what you make with yours.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun Sunday Wanda! You have such a diverse and unique collection of fabrics to work and play with. I have never been a fan of the Bear Paw pattern, but love the red and white ones, in both sizes, probably because they remind me of flowers. Looks like nice weather this week in our neck of the woods, so going outside to get some work done.
ReplyDeleteThe not-really-a-sampler combination is great!
ReplyDeleteOrphan blocks as is makes for a fun happy quilt top. I like the varied blocks and of course the color way is perfect. Nice beginnings for your Friendship Star. And your array of Kathy Doughty fabrics are wonderful.

I love your orphan block project. I have been on a mission this year to finish up my UFO's as well. I recently went thru one of my bins and found a bunch for blocks, but not enough for and entire quilt. It occurred to me to combine them into one project which is the plan. I think adding a few more things to yours would be awesome. I love the large blocks with a few smaller ones thrown in.
ReplyDeletePLAY is so good for us - mentally AND physically. Will be interesting to see what you do with those KD fabrics.
ReplyDeleteHahaha! I love home improvement and remodeling shows on HGTV! My guilty pleasure!
ReplyDeleteI love all your orphan blocks. Will be fun to see what you do with them. And those Australian fabrics are so pretty. Love all those colors.
