Playing with fabric............

I was looking for possible border fabric for my Hattie's choice quilt.  I want to cut them lengthwise so I don't have to have a seam in them.  I think the seam would be so obvious in this type of fabric.  I think these 2 are possibilities.  The blue one has sections that look like a huge hibiscus bloom.

This is another one that I had larger yardage of but I haven't put it up against the quilt blocks yet.  I think it might be too distracting.  I still have one more block to make so I have time to look through more fabric.

I spent a portion of the day yesterday cleaning up around my die cutter.  I have been cutting small scraps into 2" squares.  All of these were from the colorwash kit fabrics that I have been cutting lately.

This is the strips that are 2" or narrower that have accumulated as I cut the colorwash kits.  I have a love/hate relationship with scraps right now.  Even though most of my quilts seem to be scrap quilts because of the variety of fabrics I use in them, in reality I'm cutting from yardage most of the time....which makes more scraps.  I need to concentrate on using yardage.

  1. I WANT to cut from yardage but so many of the projects I'm working on are currently at least 80-% scrap based. Meanwhile my yardage stares at me sadly from the shelves.

  2. I am sure you will find the perfect fabric for the border. I agree that it would probably look better not to have a seam. Save those scraps and sell them at your next pop up shop - problem solved! LOL!! I am sure they would sell fast because you have such wonderful fabric.

  3. You have been so productive and proactive in cutting your scraps as you go! I like to do that also. I do tend to work largely with scraps and actually don't have much yardage on hand. I do tend to buy yardage of neutrals and background fabrics to balance out the scraps. Thank you for sharing your design process, I love being inspired by others.

  4. Those narrower left over strips are just so perfect for making string blocks.
I have started to cut from my (mostly) fat quarters these days-- I don't want to be just be using strips and cut offs...I need to whittle my fat 1/4's down...
You have such a great variety of fabrics--nice hugs, Julierose

  5. Your new fabric from yesterday's post was just luscious! Your blog name is so perfect for your fabric focus. When I read your post today and saw in the last line that you want to concentrate on using yardage, it made me wonder if you could just do a bunch of grab bags for selling when you periodically have a special sale. You would not have to curate the bags with special go-together fabrics. Your fabric is so beautiful, quilters would be thrilled to have the most unmatched bunch of scraps!

  7. I started a project using scraps from two commission quilts, but that morphed into cutting from yardage. But cutting 2.5" strips from yardage doesn't reduce the yardage much and does create more scraps. It's an endless circle and the grab bag idea for your next pop-up shop seems like a good solution for you.

  8. Fun to see your thoughts on borders for Hattie's Choice. You always find a use for your leftovers and scraps. I'm sure you will this time also.
