I read in the newspaper yesterday that brown is going to be the new trend in decorating. They said that brown is warm and comforting to people. Rich woods, leather, brown walls, and I immediately thought of brown quilts. The bottom shelf is all brown batiks from medium values through dark values. The shelf above is lots of my light values which includes some beiges. There is a shelf above that with more lights and more beige. I know I have more in the basement because I didn't have room for them in this main floor studio bookcase.
Here is the favorite thing I have made with the darkest browns. It was in 2008 and a store sample for the sewing machine store where I worked. We had a class for making this and I sold lots of kits of batiks in many color ranges.
And now for the newest stash enhancement: Australian fabrics. I was happy that the new prints are smaller designs than some in the past and some great new colors too.
You have a good collection of browns there...I have quite a few in my stash...I haven't used them all that much...those and my pinks for some reason--though i think they would do well together...

ReplyDeleteI hope brown is not the new color. I brown is a downer on its own. Reminds me of the 70s when everything was dark. I love color and can use loads of it everyday especially now with going into winter and shortened daylight. Give me lots of juicy color.

ReplyDeleteThose new Australian prints are marvelous - I agree completely about the smaller scale! And BROWN - as my recent Mischief Maker block showed, brown does NOT have to be dull. It reminds me of warmth and comfort. Our house is mostly "warm" tones and two rooms have Carmel-sandstone color walls with two more having gentle yellow walls (cheerful). Maybe I need to use my brown stash with the yellow stash . . . hmmmm
ReplyDeleteI've always loved the warmth of brown and finally had to forbid myself to buy any new brown fabric until I used up what I had. Haven't succeeded yet, but now it's the official "new" color, I'll have to get busy ... and it's the perfect excuse to shop for more. I enjoy all your posts and I'm in awe of your color sense for combining fabric, but I especially appreciate your reports illustrating how your designs evolve. They've taught me a lot about evaluating and improving my own ideas.
ReplyDeleteLove your Australian fabrics! I have that purse pattern and have about 85 % of it completeted. I started it a number of years ago. After I got the top bands on, I decided it was too floppy and really needed some interfacing. I haven't gotten around to fixing that yet and completing it. Yours is very pretty.

Glad to hear that brown is becoming popular again - I have a whole shelf of fabrics in that color. The Australia fabrics are gorgeous & very different from fabrics in the past. I've collected those for 45 years...memories of when I lived there. I have so much I don't dare buy any more, though I'm very tempted! Hope you're having a good day! Deb E
ReplyDeleteI'm not ready for brown - I made a lot of brown quilts when I started quilting. Lori Holt's current sewalong is browns and it is tempting, so I guess I might be led in that direction. Love the purse!

I only have about 4 or 5 pieces of Austrialian fabric that my brother brought back from Australia when he was on tour over there - I don't remember with who - R.E.M, Bruce - doesn't really matter. I just don't have enough to do anything with.
ReplyDeleteBrown is a color that puzzles me. I did make a brown and pink baby quilt that was requested in those colors and it turned out very cute, but brown is just not a color I use.
I did a gift quilt in brown/autumnal colors for a friend a few years ago. My daughter's to-be quilt is in that same colorway. If I could just get to piecing it. I much more enjoy rehabilitating orphan quilt blocks and tops into finished creations.
