Playing with sashing............

I'm starting out with a photo I showed yesterday as I contemplated whether to add sashing between the blocks.  Here I show one color square as a cornerstone.

In a comment Jan from the Colorful Fabriholic suggested making the sashing strips from the low volume squares so the stars would look like they are floating on a low volume background.  I had overcut the number of squares I needed so I thought it was a great idea.  Here I tried something different at the joining of the strips but I think it looks too clunky.

Then I exchanged the squares with triangle blocks but I'm still not sure it adds anything.

For the last one I just filled in with low volume squares to create the floating stars.

Since I have to think about this I went back to the Blooming 9 patch and started working on the remaining rows.

Right on cue, Mr. Robin appeared in the back yard on the first day of spring.

  2. I love the low volume squares too, but I think you need the cornerstone square to divide the blocks, so your eyes have a place to rest.

  3. I like the sashing in the low volume fabric from what you show I like #1 and 3 the best but after you have it up on the wall for awhile you will know what you like and might even change it before you decide

  4. I like the final photo of the low volume squares as the sashing - subtle but powerful. Hooray for the first robin - they've all been hanging out here waiting to head your way.

  5. What a brilliant idea to use the low volume squares to make the sashing! I think the single cornerstone looks best, although the friendship star would be my second choice.

  6. I like the low-volume squares and the Friendship Star. The star works better than the colorful squares because the triangles echo the units in the block.

  7. I love your star blocks and I know you will decide the best way to make them sparkle even more. HMMmm ~ we've had robins here for three weeks now. Surprised that ours arrived earlier than yours.
