Wild/Hardy Geranium.......

I had some questions about the Wild/Hardy Geranium plant I showed yesterday.  This particular variety grows in a round mound and blooms several times during the summer.

This is another variety and I have it with both lavender flowers and white flowers.  It just spreads out, not in a mound like the other one.  If you look it up it is called Cranesbill and Hardy Geranium if you are buying it from a nursery.  On a site that talked about native plants they called it Wild Geranium.  It is very easy to grow and is a perennial.

Another native plant is this one that a friend gave me.  She said she got it from her grandmother's garden and that her grandmother called it Heliotrope.  It has very sweet smelling flowers, a strong smell that reminds me of lilacs.

Here is a close up of the flowers.  I haven't been able to find any more information about it.  added at 10:43 a.m.
I found it finally and is an invasive plant according to the site.  Here is its official name:

Valeriana officinalis (Garden Heliotrope)

Growing in the other side of this flower bed are the little Stella D'Oro lilies shown below.  Another friend gave me 3 of them about 10 years ago.  There are lots of buds so they will continue blooming for a month or more.

  1. Pretty plants! I forgot to take pictures last evening of what is going on in my flower beds. Honestly, nothing blooming yet, but I did see buds on my Shasta daisies. If it is not raining tonight as predicted, I need to do some serious weeding and maybe I will remember to take a picture. I know I need to rearrange some plants to fill in some bare spots.

  2. I have the bright fuchsia purple one in many parts of my garden. I also have a beautiful pale pink one that grows slower, but I just love it. I have a lot of it away and it seems to root in just fine.

  3. Great blog - garden information and quilting information. I enjoy reading your blog EVERY day and go back into your archives when I'm ready to do one of the patterns you've shown in the blog. Contemplating the Bento box one using a beautiful collection of fall colored batiks. I'll plan and then get to it when the weather is cooler. Thank you for great inspiration.

  7. I've heard of cranesbill, but didn't know it's a wild geranium. I wonder if it could take our heat. I'll have to do a little looking around. Love seeing your flowers! They are all so pretty. That heliotrope is really pretty, too.
