Playing with stash.........

Yesterday I pulled out my black and white batiks.  Most of them are from the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Here is the photo on the pattern I showed Saturday on my blog post.  The size I am making takes 10 black and white horizontal bars.

Here are the 10 I pulled as possible choices.  I am wondering if the white on top will work for the little background squares.

By tonight or tomorrow this bud should be fully opened on my cactus.  This plant has 7 buds and I have another that has smaller buds and they will be white blooms.

  1. Black and whites make great Quilts. Your fabric choice will be great...
    Enjoy your cacti flowers.

  2. I have 2 b/w baby quilts ready to quilt!!! Not quite as subtle as this though. I noticed 2 buds... on my cactus a week or so ago. Haven't looked again... maybe later today.

I like the look of this quilt and may have to make it.... or something similar... but first the baby quilts!!!

  3. Great black and whites. I don't have a single bud. What are you going to use for the colorful strips?

  4. Beautiful collection of Black and White batiks Wanda. Years ago I made one for one of our granddaughters who, at the time, was really into B&W.

  5. Using the B&W fabrics as the basis means the vertical strips could be any color combo.

  6. Some of my Christmas cactus are setting buds also. Seems early to me but not complaining. Love the blooms.

  7. Nice selection of prints- and b&w quilts are so effective. Nice pattern, too.

  9. I love the blacks and whites with the splashes of color. I think that white will work fine with it. It appears to have enough contrast.

It's always fun to see your cactus start blooming. Hard to imagine it is that time of the year again.

  10. It is going to be beautiful! I have been buying a few jelly rolls and layer cakes through the last few years and I seem to pull all the greys out and not use them. I'm thinking one day when I have more I'll surprise myself and discover how pretty a grey based quilt can be. Your black and whites are going to make your "exuberant colors" pop :)
    Have fun!

  11. Oddly I just finished a quilt with lots of black and white fabrics from this same era. They certainly are beautiful but I'm glad to know we're both using them up.

  12. Designing with your beautiful black and whites will make another awesome quilt top. I like the photo of it and know I am going to LOVE what you create with yours. Anxious to see those white cactus blossoms.

  13. I think I've ever only had one black and white batik in my stash. None of the shops here stock them . . . Cacti are a sure sign that fall is here and the holidays aren't far in the future!

  14. Looking forward to seeing what you create. I have always admired this pattern and I am almost certain I have it pinned from a while ago.

  15. What a great collection of B & W batiks. I made aquilt about 10+ years ago in which I used a lot of B & W batiks and hallway through I decided to enlarge the project so I needed to buy some additional fabrics. But there were NO black and white batiks to be found anywhere. I couldn’t find any in my local quilt shop nor añywhere on line. I guess it was just the moment, because very soon there after they began to come back - thankfully!,

  16. I'm in Christmas Cactus crisis, all of mine seem to be either desiccated or waterlogged - too late to try rooting healthy bits, I'm afraid. I may need to start over from scratch, which makes me sad because several were gifts from departed friends. Sigh. Not a very cheerful note to thank you for your lovely pictures, so sorry.

  17. I don't see many black and white prints in batik at my local shops. I do have a good collection of them in regular cotton.
I have one Thanksgiving cactus with two open flowers, but most of the rest haven't even budded. It's odd because I have one with orange flowers which is usually blooming for Halloween.

  20. Black and white quilts with some color added are so pretty. In fact, there is a Splash of Color quilt-along going on currently for them at Busy Hands Quilts.blogspot.com :)
