Half and half..........

I finally made it to the design wall yesterday.  I started doing the layout wrong and changed to what I thought was the correct way.  Then I decided to put the other half up the way I thought was wrong and see which way I like it best.

On the layout on the left the star points alternate, light, dark, light dark.  On the layout on the right there are 2 dark, 2 light, 2 dark, 2 light points.  I think I have seen both of these layouts before and never noticed what the difference was.

I know it is an optical illusion but the stars seem closer together in the left layout.

Some of the stars are low contrast because of the busy prints.

With the plainer light prints the contrast is higher.

Which layout do you like best? (I probably won't answer comments today but would love to hear from you)

  1. I'm so happy to see you playing on your design wall again. Both layouts look great but somehow I like the one on the right.

  2. It must feel good to be back at the design wall! Good that you are taking care to follow doctors orders. I like the version on the left. And I love the fact that there are low contrast and some not. Makes you take that extra moment to study your fabrics, and fabric choices, something I love to do with your quilts.

  3. I love the quilt with both just as it is..so interesting

  4. The stars seem to twinkle in the left arrangement. There seems to be a movement in them.
Good to see your focus on block arrangements rather than having to be concerned about your health issues. Welcome back, Wanda!

  5. I prefer the layout on the right. The stars do look a bit further apart, and I like that airier look, and and the secondary pattern between the stars is more unified.

  6. Oh my goodness. What a difference. I thought you had two different size blocks with the one on the right being larger. And at first glance I thought the right one was one of those"shimmering" patterns. The left pattern seems more defined. Hope you are feeling great!!

  7. I like the right because it seems that the Stars shimmer and there is less grid like feel and less predictability than the left. The overall effect is more interesting than the left because your eye has to keep moving to take in the design,

  8. While I like the way it goes first one way, then another, if I had to choose a side it would be the right side.

  9. Well, I never realized the different effect of the layouts on this one! But now that you have pointed it all out, I see the differences. The left arrangement is more usual, traditional maybe, but the left side moves, shimmers and seems to dance. The stars almost seems secondary in this one. And I like it:)

  10. oops...I meant the right side has the movement.

  11. I like the high contrast as i like to see the stars - but that is me - I'm sure whatever you decide it will be a fantastic quilt - they always are.

  12. definitely the one on the right. Yes, it gives a larger appearance to the stars.

  13. If I were picking just one - my choice is the right side of the photo. But I would love it "mixed up" a bit - with some of each scattered throughout.

  14. Wow, it really is a matter of preference, they are both pretty!... what I noticed was that in the layout on the right, the squares of color are more prominent and the stars aren't as noticeable, and on the left the stars are more noticeable. Very pretty! I've always liked that block, have never made it.

  15. I changed my mind - I saw the small thumbnail on my "reader" and realized that the Left side is actually my favorite.

  16. It took me a while to see the difference because of the different levels of contrast due to the busy prints, and even then I had to look for it. Since you have that mix of high contrast & low contrast, I think either layout will work.

With the high contrast blocks, I like the secondary pattern that shows up with the arrangement of having the points in pairs....but it's far less noticeable in the low contrast blocks.

The only thing I noticed that I'd change is you have a couple where the most visible part is the diagonal line of red triangles marching across (bottom left to right) which I think you'll lose once you make all the star points the same way, so no big deal.

Glad you are feeling well enough to design again! Welcome back!

  17. The are both beautiful, but the minute I scrolled down to the quilt picture, my eye went directly to the right side. I then covered one side and checked out the other, for both sides and still came up with the right side being my choice for the quilt. What really matters is which side appeals more to you. Enjoy your day.

  18. I like the layout on the right. HOORAY for being back at the design wall!!!!!

  19. I like both layouts but if I have to pick I would say the one on the right.

  20. I like the one on the left.
What will you do if the viewers' choices come in at 50-50?

  21. With my judge's eye, I see the layout on the right as highlighting the light triangles which in turn allows the dark triangles to be a high contrast center focus. This 2light, 2dark points setting is more visually dynamic than the left setting.

  22. I love both but am leaning right.

I like the layout on the left best. Congratulations on more great work! You continue to amaze me with what you accomplish. Kay Hunzinger

  24. I like them both but my immediate thought was that the one on the right looks more like your work. Shimmery.

  25. I honestly don't know that I prefer one over the other. I shaded each side and looked at each side separately and they are both equally Wandaful.

  26. I like the left....I think " twinkle" is the good word to describe it !!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. This is interesting! I like the one on the left better, as it has a more 'defined' look.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Who knew there would be such a difference. The stars on the left appear more defined. I think I prefer the right side with the more muted stars, but it is amazing either way.

  29. I think I like the one on the right. At first glance I did but now I'm not sure. They both are very interesting.

  30. Glad you're back to the design wall! I prefer the layout on the left because first I see dark squares on point in the layout on the right. I like the alternating effect in the layout on the left better. Whichever you choose, I'm sure it'll turn out stunning!

  31. I agree with Hedy - both are Wandaful!

  32. The one on the right is new to me and I like it here ! I don't think i'd like it with full-on contrast.

    ReplyDelete
  33. The left-hand layout seems to make the stars more noticeable, although it's a very subtle difference.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Interesting! I printed out the quilt pieces and cut them apart. When separated the right hand side just sings with open spaces setting off the stars, twinkling with delight. That is not to say that the left side is not equally creative- just a different dynamic. Wonderful to play with. Thank you Wanda.

  35. I like the feeling of space with the blocks on the right. I never knew there was an alternative!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Well — now I can't decide! I liked the left... then I liked the right... then I liked the left again...
This could go on for days.
The left seems to "move" more, and the right side appears to have more of a wide-open-space effect. But that can change with some repositioning. And there's the issue of a photo versus real life fabric.
It's your quilt, and you know what you like. Either one "works", so do what pleases YOU.

  37. It's so good to see you back at your design wall! And - being Left-Handed - the layout on the Left should probably be my favorite - but I like the one on the Right much better. It will be interesting to see which you one YOU choose - ;))

    ReplyDelete
  38. Right hand side is my pick, Hope you are going slowly and no more hiccups.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I like the design on the right best, it seems calmer somehow.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Though I like the individual stars best with alternating light and dark points, overall I much prefer the right side, with the pairs. I think it's the mixed up background on the left that looks, well, over mixed!

  41. At dinner this evening, I showed my husband the two choices, printed and cut apart. Oh, definitely, the left side. It is much more complex. I had voted for the right side with more openness. Opposites attract!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I always seem to get answers that are 50/50 when I ask a question like this!

Personally I think I like the one on the right - in my mind it's more unusual.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I'm glad I'm not making this decision. I'd never noticed this difference before. On the left there seems to be more space and movement, with the stars being emphasised. But the right is more atmospheric and reminds me of stars twinkling in a cloudy sky. Both will be great.
I'm looking forward to seeing which one you choose, and why.

  44. What fun! When I lean back in my chair, and squint my eyes, the one on the left becomes mush. I like the one on the right. Another Dot.

    ReplyDelete
  45. It's a close call, but I definitely like the left side more. It's nice to see that quilt again!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Happy to see you're now able to use that left arm and get busy on the design wall. Your Hunter Star blocks are beautiful and I love the arrangement on the left hand side best of all.

    ReplyDelete
  47. While I like the "diamonds" the background makes at right, I prefer the layout on the left.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I like the higher contrast one better, but any low contrast ones work well, too, when they're surrounded by the high contrast ones. We can see that in the larger photo of all the blocks together.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I couldn't really see the difference until I squinted! But I much prefer the left side as the darker colours put together are a little too much and leaves a large square, but the left it's more random and to me "fits" nicely together.
It looks beautiful when I don't squint too!

  50. I love them both. But I think the one on the right would be my favorite. It's muted and has a softness to it I like. Have fun deciding which one to go with as eiither would be lovely.

  51. I'm sure the design wall has missed you all these weeks! Reading all the comments above it seems either layout would be great. I have to agree with several who said they didn't realize there were options on this layout. With that said, I really prefer the artsy looking right side. It does seem to sparkle and shimmer in the thumbnail photos. Only you can see how it looks up close and personal. I can't wait to see which you make!

  52. I haven’t tried to read the other comments - I’ll let you do the tally! I vote for the right, because I think it looks a bit less crowded than the left. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a pen optical illusion, what matters is how it looks to the viewer, the impression it gives you!
