Yesterday morning I took this photo from my kitchen window. My camera kept wanting to focus on the background and this is the only photo that was good. The butterflies are loving the coneflowers and so are the bees and wasps. The flowers are starting to fade and have holes from bugs. I leave the dried seed heads all winter for the birds to eat.
In the background are the Dianthus and Coreopsis that are in front of the tree straight out from my window.
I sewed units for 4 more large star blocks. I left the pieces in the bottom right corner so you can see that I'm designing with the triangles. I haven't sewn any blocks together yet and most likely won't until I have more made and know what direction I'm going with this quilt. I'm liking the red and black with white, beige and pale green in the light fabrics. I have 4 more combinations to sew in this color range. I have 2 options: add more colors in or repeat the same fabrics to make more blocks. I'm going to go slowly and enjoy making this one so no decisions at this point.
My pale pink Weigela bush keeps blooming. It has a few branches that bloom at a time so it has been partially in bloom for a couple months.
Hah---complicated star! Your butterfly is gorgeous. We have a ton of butterflies this year, like yours, but ours don't have as much of the orange. We must have the plainer cousins.
ReplyDeleteYes, this color combo is great and I really like your layout for the colors. Striking photo of the beautiful butterfly!
ReplyDeleteWhen I first saw the star.... I liked it! It will make a very striking color combo. We have had very few butterflies this year, not even many of the cabbage or alfalfa ones. Plenty of bees though.
ReplyDeleteYour lovely collection of aboriginal fabrics inspired me to internet-shop for a few, starting a little collection of my own. I haven't seen many light colored pieces....are they as rare as they seem? For any (far off) quilt, I might have to consider using Kaffe shot cottons or hand dyes?? The star quilt is inspiring!
ReplyDeleteI am really intrigued with the way your Hunter Star quilt is progressing. The color combination is striking.
ReplyDeleteThe quilt is coming along nicely! You have gotten a lot done since yesterday. I have a friend that is raising Monarch butterflies. She showed me the process and it started with a milkweed garden, gathering the caterpillars, feeding the caterpillars and cleaning up after them, then hanging the cocoons (they are called something else but you get the idea) on a string until the butterflies emerge.
ReplyDeleteWhen I had a Weigela bush I used to love it because it bloomed all through the summer. The only thing was that I had it right by the sidewalk going to my door and the bees also loved the bush. So sometimes the bees didn't like me getting so close. They are a beautiful plant. Love your garden, You have something blooming all the time.
ReplyDeleteYour garden pics are pretty, I love the butterfly picture. I have had several really larger than normal butterflies in our garden this year. I also have a huge abundance of the really big bees, we call them Bumblebees here. I've never been stung even though I walk through the flowers all the time. I love the way you are making this quilt and I know you will probably shift the pieces every which way before you are done, we all love it BTW: I received a Pinterest post and your quilts were all over it !
ReplyDeleteLove the butterfly on the coneflower. I have lots of coneflowers, but have not seen a single butterfly. Later, the goldfinch show up to eat the seeds. The color palette of the quilt is interesting to see develop.
ReplyDeleteHunter Star ! It is absolutely gorgeous, you always design with fabrics that take my breath away. This going to be another of my favorites.
ReplyDeleteYou'll have to show us your garden photos again this winter when we are tired of all the snow and cold. (*._.*). They always make me feel good.

These fabrics are playing together so well! Sizing the photo up reveals all those intricate colours and dots making up the fabric.
ReplyDeleteYour Hunter Star blocks are coming along beautifully!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE those HS blocks. Your butterfly looks so content on the flowers.
