I like progress............

The Marcia Derse fabric Drunkard's Path top is finished.  I decided it won't have borders.  It ended up at 48.5" x 69.5".  It is mostly scraps from cutting this quilt with only a few extra fabrics added.

I made a slight miscalculation on how many small squares I need.  I must have figured only a single row instead of a double row.  In any case I need another 63 small fussy cut floral squares.  I don't mind repeating fabrics.  Some people making this quilt have used all different fabrics for every square.  The inspiration for this quilt can be found here
The tiger lilies are starting to bloom.

The Rudbeckia in front of the tiger lilies is almost ready to bloom.

I have lots and lots of green tomatoes but none on the big plants have turned color yet.  I have 2 little bush tomatoes that had small tomatoes on them when I bought them.  The squirrels have gotten 2 of them, I have eaten 2 that ripened and I have 2 more ready to eat.  I also have 2 on the windowsill in the kitchen to ripen, well away from the squirrels' sharp little teeth.
A few days ago I mentioned the path through my yard, a shortcut for teenagers.  My block is about 3-4 blocks long, no side streets so the kids cut through yards.  Several people asked if it was a right of way and whether this was a normal practice.  It isn't a right of way; it is my private property.  I live in a small town and I guess the kids feel comfortable doing this.  There is a pile of boards at the lot line with the neighbor.  I asked my neighbor lady in her late 80s if they were her boards and she said yes she put them there to discourage kids cutting through.  Well, they just step over them so that didn't work.

  1. The DP top looks good.....a good one to have on hand for a quick finish to gift.
Wow....the seed packets look fabulous and the double row of smaller florals is a good finish. Who cares if you repeat fabrics because they are so beautiful! You probably can't stop the kids without putting up a fence.....if I remember correctly from my much younger days.

  2. I agree with the above comment LOL - and a fence might not even keep them from cutting through - kids will be kids after all

  3. I am sure I would be repeating some fabrics in the border rows on the Seed Packet quilt.

I would probably have to make some fried green tomatoes. But that may be a Southern thing.

  4. I see more cutting in your future! I have lots of green tomatoes waiting to turn too.

  5. What a difference a few decades makes. I was taught not to go through people's yards. Don't think it's that the kids are comfortable, it's that they don't want to have to walk 'all the way around' and their parents don't teach them to respect other people's property. I beat if you started walking through their yard, they would have a fit.

Now off my soap box and back to watering my yard! (where there is a huge hedge and only deer and bunnies trespass).

  6. Your DP top is gorgeous! Have fun cutting those additional floral blocks - that will be a very pretty quilt, too.

We had neighbors who allowed us to cut through and others who asked us not to. It was the way of our world when we were growing up. Here and now all our neighbors have fences (the whole city does) so cutting through is really not an option for anyone.

  7. I love your quilt tops. Both are so pretty, I love all the Kaffe flowers, quite a few there. About the kids cutting through your yard, I'm sure you would prefer they not do it. I think the best thing to do is to keep your yard ready for them to walk through it without breaking your plants. Sometimes you have to deal with negative things.

  8. You'd never know your Dp quilt was made from scraps Wanda... It turned out to be exuberant as usual.
Your Seed Packet piece is going to be another show stopper. Just like your gardens, tomatoes look delicious and your blossoms so vibrant.

We have signs posted all over our property... When we catch the trespassers, they always play dumb saying they didn't see the signs... and these are grown ups yet. Standing right by a sign ! Is it the time we live in now that no one respects private property ?

  9. I love both quilts. My tomatoes are light green and small yet, but they will turn red in a little. Just hope the bugs will stay away, because I don't use pesticides. Well..kids are kids and sometimes they like to do forbidden things.

  10. The flower quilt looks terrific. I can imagine a freezing dark day in winter and looking at that quilt would ease the day. The Marcia Derse quilt is so unique, it looks like a painting.

  11. When we first bought our house, over 30 years ago, there were kids who cut through our yard. Having grown up in the country, where we were more isolated, I couldn't believe it! We also had neighbor kids behind us who would come in our yard and play on our play set when our kids weren't outside (these were not friends of our kids). We now have a fence - so that all has stopped. Personally, I don't like the presumption of that behavior - kids or not, I believe they should be taught to respect other people's property. You're much more tolerant than I.
On another note, love your quilts - always!

  12. The Drunkards Path is nicely done and I love the way the colors bounce from one to another. It has a really Art Deco feel too. Bravo on another beautifully crafted quilt top! I really enjoy seeing all the gardening photos too. Thanks for sharing!

  13. Your Drunkards Path quilt is very pretty. As always you have such an eye for color! We lived across the street from the high school and I would see kids in the neighbors yard during the noon hour. They were usually were smoking, but what really upset me was when the boys would "relieve" themselves. I spoke to the school board but they didn't want to address the problems. And this was almost 25 years ago. The kids won't learn manners from parents who don't have manners either.

  14. The Drunkard's Path is just gorgeous.

Your garden is really looking great too. The path sounds like it has become a public walkway. They have those in England and you are allowed to actually walk through someone's pasture. There is some rule about the path needing to be walked so many times per year to keep it public so they dedicate days for people to go out and walk these paths to keep them public.
