One finish.........

I just finished one mug rug yesterday.  The incentive to do it was that it is a gift for my hairdresser and my hair cut is this morning.  Nothing like a deadline to get something done.

She is a non-sewer/quilter so I added my tag so she will know what it is.

How about this for commitment?  30 yards of Hobbs 80/20 batting.  My quilts take an average of 2 yards each so that is 15 quilts.  Since I usually finish about 20 a year it will probably be at least half this size by the end of 2017.  I also use Warm and Natural batting and have a roll of it too.  It is mostly for wallhangings because it has scrim in it and hangs nice and straight against the wall.  Between the 2 rolls I will probably use close to 40 yards in a year if I can keep up the pace I have been doing.
My champagne colored cactus bloomed yesterday.

It is an unusual color.

One more photo just because it is so pretty.  The pottery is a Goodwill find.

  1. The cactus is beautiful and I do love that color. Lots of batting equals lots of quilts.
I just want to say thank you for all the motivation and inspiration that I have gotten from you. Visiting your blog is like having a personal mentor that gives me nudges and expands my vision.
Wishing you lots of stitches for the next year.

  2. A deadline is a interesting thing. I hate them, but they can certainly motivate me to finish something.

That is a lot of batting. I wouldn't have a place to store a roll like that.

  3. Love your cactus color and the Goodwill pot is beautiful. I find the best things at thrift stores. I have been thinking of buying one of these big rolls in the 90" width as I make so many quilts about that size. I know people buy them online but have never figured out where to get them or when they are on sale. Maybe next year ?

  4. Hobbs 80/20 is my favorite batt, too! Not a fan of those really thin batts so many people favor. That would be nice to always have plenty of batting on hand.

  7. love your tag for the mug what a great idea. So much batting! I have often times wished I had room for one like that and that my 3 roller hand quilting frame had a roller for it on the bottom like a see long arm frames do - but it doesn't and I have no room for it so I will continue as I do - I don't use near as much as you.

  8. Where did you get your Hobbs batting from? I have been buying Warm and Natural on the bolt and I will be needed to buy another one in the next month or so. It is amazing how much batting we can go thru in a year!

    Your champagne cactus is gorgeous!

  10. Such an unusual colour for the Christmas cactus - I think it's super.
I used to buy rolls of batting when I was teaching, after seeing your post I'm wondering whether to buy in bulk again, it's just finding a place to store the roll. Is the Hobb 80% cotton and 20% polyester?

  11. Oh I do love the color of your cactus! I look forward to the blooms every year. Alas, I think I've neglected my because it appears to be a bit droopy right now. The colors of all your quilts amaze me! I love your work!

  12. That is an extraordinary color on the cactus. Mine hasn't bloomed much recently and I'm always too lazy to move it anywhere cool.
Love the colors in your mug rug. Nothing like necessity to get you going. I haven't done any in a while and I love doing them. Hmm, maybe I'll get one done before my hair appt next week.

  13. Wanda, is that piece of pottery from South America, Columbia perhaps? When the first Rotary student stayed w/my parents, she brought local pottery as gifts...and that shape (kind of like a tall jello mold) is reminiscent of some of the pottery. The older I get, the less I like schedules....probably because I tend to be inundated with them!

  14. Have you ever done a discussion on battings - the terms, the uses of different kinds, and suggestions for type of batting with certain projects (bed quilt, baby quilt, wall hanging large, wall hanging small, watercolor)?

  17. Cheaper by the bolt! I remember the first time I made a bulk purchase of W&N -- in 1997. I felt very daring buying so much at one time, but I thought Joann's might never have such a sale again. Was I wrong! In the nearly twenty years since then I've bought multiple yardage (and several bolts).

I pin a mug rug "explanation" to those I make, too. I want the recipients to use 'em, not preserve them.

  19. Looks like 2017 is going to have more quilts finished (and started)!! I bet your hairdresser will love the mat & use it!! She will think of you,as she does. Pretty colored Christmas cactus---never have seen this color before. I bought a poinsettia at the Ace hardware store. It has one cream colored leaf blossom & three blossoms that look like Kaffe got ahold of it. They are red with all different spots and streaks of cream. Very pretty!!
