First blocks.........

I did a lot of cutting yesterday (Strips 'n Curves templates set 1 and 2 and rotary cutter) and by last night I was ready to lay out some blocks.  I always start this way, making some random blocks and then go to the design wall when I have a bunch sewn.  At that time I decide what I need for the rest of the blocks and plan them.
This is all loose pieces laying on the table.  I did get these 8 sewn last night while I watched the news and weather.  The blocks look a little bumpy right after they are sewn but they will look fine when they are pressed.  Here is a post where I show sewing the curved seam.  I now clip a small V at the center of each piece and don't use any pins.

We got almost an inch of rain Tuesday night and yesterday was hot and steamy - 93 degrees.  I did my half hour of weed pulling when it got down to 82 just before dark.  Today is supposed to be cooler so I will be planting my 91cent begonia.  I love those clearance sales.  I got some Dahlia bulbs too (3 for $2) so I'll get them planted in pots.
The Red Penstemon is in full bloom and leaning over the sidewalk after the rain.  The balloon flowers will be the next ones to bloom in this garden.

The Milkweed is starting to bloom.  I haven't seen any Monarch butterflies yet.

  1. There will be some great movement in those blocks and the whole quilt!!!! It has been hot and very humid here, too.

  2. Those blocks are wonderful. I like how they are not all made up of the same units. We are getting rain this morning finally! Lighting and thunder yeah! We needed the rain so bad. There are possibilities of rain this afternoon and tonight too.

  3. that will be a colorful quilt - I have an acrylic set of 3 pieces It think I haven't made one in awhile, one year I made drunkard's path for both the grandchildren and that was the last time I used it.

  4. Those blocks are really pleasing to look at. I always have trouble with curved pieces that need to fit exactly - like the drunkard's path block. So I may cut a few pieces and try your method.

  5. Thank you for sharing photos of your yard. I live in SC......the heat and humid really is tough on the plants.

  6. While we have been getting a bit of rain, it's in the 60's in Helena, MT. Lettuce is loving it, the tomatoes are sitting there.

  7. I love your progress so far - I looked back at yesterday's photo's were you showed the placements of the rulers, to see how those turned out. I like the idea of more than 2 cut pieces as it means the left-over piece after your first cut can be used on another block. Looking good; bring on tomorrow :)
(my car throttle snapped while I was out last night - I have recovery and left the car outside the garage overnight. I'm going to pick it back up in the next hour - he said £25/$35 inc. labour, so that sounds good to me :) )

  8. Looking forward to seeing this quilt progress. I am going to watch your post on sewing curves. Thank you. Just asked DH whatt a throttle was (Leslie's comment). Don't think I've seen one.
