Straightening...........

When I am cutting off of my batik yardage and there is only about 1/4 yard left I put it on a pile on the table.  Yesterday the pile was threatening to topple over so I sorted the pieces by color and stacked them into a neater pile.  There are 195 fabrics in that 10.5" tall pile.  At today's prices at a local quilt shop ($11.95 per yard) that is $582.56 worth of fabric.

I cut 2 binding strips from the leftover backing fabric and sewed it onto the dark edges of this quilt.  I haven't decided whether I'll change to a lighter color for the other half or just use this all the way around it.  I started the hand sewing last night.

  1. Stash is worth a lot of money. Current prices make it even worth more to replace. It is am expensive hobby to be involved in. Colors are beautiful to look at. Chris

  2. That is better to find than a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow- infinitely more useable! Beautiful range of colors.

  3. This makes me wonder how much money I have invested in my stash! I am a bargain shopper, but still all those yards add up! Your stack is beautiful!

  4. It's very sobering when we look at the value of our stash. In my mother's and grandmother's generations, quilting was a frugal enterprise...no more.

  5. That stack of batiks is inspiring all on its own - such a lovely stack of colour to look at on a grey winter day!

  6. When I am told by someone that they are thinking of becoming a quilter, I tell them right upfront that it is an expensive hobby. They are always surprised by this. In our area, batiks cost up to $14.95 a yard at the better stores, $12.95 at Joann's. You have a little colorful goldmine there.

  8. Why I love working from my stash and being a scrappy quilter . . . that $11.95/yard business is real, but still . . .

  10. Move to Canada - that pile is worth a cool grand! (and change). Fabric is consistently 20$/m here. (that's a yard and an eighth).

I've wondered for a while what your whole sewing room looks like, especially your stash cupboards/shelves/whatevers. Just how much fabric have you got!?

  12. Your stash always amazes me. It is "interesting" how much our stash is worth. On New Year's Eve I took several projects to my local quilt store and bought the fabric I needed to finish them, including backing. I hope to sew from my stash for the first part of the year. I like my fabric and I will like it even better as a finished quilt!

  13. I love seeing fabrics stacked up just as you have done with your batiks and we don't always realise the amount in cash terms!

  14. Your use of batiks is very intuitive and colorful. I have never seen the bento box in batik. It really gives it a lot of life. Good going.

  15. Quite interesting that you'd make and attach binding to part of the quilt before you've even decided - much less made - binding for the rest of the quilt! That would never have occurred to me! But, of course, it is a perfectly acceptable way to proceed! Good for you, Wanda!
