I put all of the sewn blocks on the design wall. Then I added some that are just 2 pieces loose on the wall, not sewn. I added the 3 blocks that aren't pieced and also added one of the Australian fabrics. I'm not sure what I will do next, but this isn't doing anything for me. I am linking up with the Drunkard's Path quiltalong. The logo/link is on my right sidebar. Check it out to see what everyone else is doing.
The tree across the street has more color every day. It is also losing its leaves quite fast.
I just had to show this beauty one more time. I may have to share another photo if it has 5 or 6 full blooms at once.
Just my 2 cents worth, but the unpieced black and gold print squares seem distracting. I want to explore each pieced block, but my eye keeps being drawn only to the black and gold. Perhaps a print with a less sharply-contrasting pattern?

I also think the black and gold prints are a distraction. I think the rest of the quilt works and I know you have just the right fabric to put in place.
ReplyDeleteI started a drunkard's path quilt, once. I thought it would be a good idea to use a variety of Japanese prints plus one gray (to draw out the colors of the prints). I cut and sewed a whole bunch of blocks, but when I put them on the design wall, they did nothing for me.
ReplyDeleteI also realized that because of the seam allowances, the component pieces didn't mesh for cutting, and you basically need two tops' worth of yardage for one top. Given that I didn't like how it looked, the wastage became a show stopper.
Well, now I know. I am happy to admire all drunkard's path quilts from afar.

Wanda, I somewhat agree regarding the black and gold, but my eye also keeps going to the white antelope squares. If I look just at the right side center and below, eliminating the 2 aforementioned blocks, it looks great to me, but then, that's just my opinion.
ReplyDeleteThis is fascinating, I haven't any experience with this but I do know you will fix it. I feel like I am looking at the antelopes through portholes. It is so encouraging for me that you put your work up step by step, it helps no end to remember that everybody struggles sometimes!
ReplyDeleteI like the use of the large and small DP units together, and your fabrics. Thanks for the link- will check out the quilt-along.
ReplyDeleteUnderstand . . . I've started stitching my blocks and the layout I tried left me completely cold.
ReplyDeleteI have a feeling that you will figure this out. The fabrics you have there are awesome and the quilt is going to be beautiful once you decide how to move forward. I too am glad that you put your things up so we can see what is not working and then let us know how you figured it out.
ReplyDeleteI actually like it. I like the mixture of block size and the occasional one patch thrown in. Fall here is so brief, so I'm enjoying the change of color while it lasts!
ReplyDeleteWell, I have to get my 2 cents worth in on this one ... For me the distraction is in the bottom right corner. The other 3 corners are all alike with the 3/4 circles & my eye keeps going to that 4th corner wanting to turn something.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the way you post your progress from day to day as you design your beauties. I find myself anxious to see the next step each morning.
I love the individual blocks and I know that you will figure out why you don't like it.
ReplyDeleteMy 1 cent worth... I agree with others who find the black and the white squares distracting. Perhaps if the black squares used different parts of the fabric so that they don't look identical. Or if the black fabric were used in a curved seam block. I often avoid white in my quilts because it stands out so much. Or else I make sure that I have a lot of white all over the quilt. I do like your white fabric so hope it can be used somehow or somewhere.
ReplyDeleteI also find the middle square to be somewhat distracting. That being said, I also know that just as soon as you move or remove the distracting square, another one often becomes distracting of stands out from the others.
What I like about your quilts so much is that when I look at them, my eyes keep moving around, looking at first one area and then the next. No one area shouts for attention. And no one area fades into the background. It's like looking at a bubbling fountain or a cascading waterfall.

Wanda, this little quilt caught my eye today, and I'm not sure why. I think I like the randomness of it, and the interesting mix of colours. I have been organizing things to death lately, so maybe I am in the mood for something more improvisational.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, maybe try breaking up the little circle in the centre, and let the whole thing be less organized, rather than more! Good luck!
Wanda, I have to agree that the antelope block seems to have a lot of white compared to the other blocks. Could that fabric be overdyed do you think?
ReplyDeleteMy eye is drawn to the antelope blocks, but I wonder about putting them in the middle of the quilt and then working around them?
ReplyDeleteI like the black and gold fabric - maybe if it was part of a DP block it would just add to the mix more.
And I meant to say - that tree is just beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI love your antelopes! I think they're just right in your design. I'm not wild about the yellow and black unpieced squares, but the one thing that catches my eye and seems off is the upper left block; the colors, as seen on my computer, are too close and seem blah, especially with the block to its right and the one on the far left of the next row.
ReplyDeleteWell I love the whole thing. I love the antelope fussy cut blocks. If your plan was to make it bigger just keep going. If it was going to be small and you hate it, send it to me.
ReplyDeleteMy Christmas cactus are blooming also. I put them outside on the porch this summer and I think they really enjoyed that.
I'm sure you'll make your quilt just right (if you haven't already). You always do! Loved seeing how it's coming along.
