Random plank #4

Random plank #4 measures 64" x 96" at this point.  I used 70 strips of Kaffe collective fabrics and 118 spacer squares (which = 5.5 strips).  Around 20 of the strips were left full length (42-44") and the rest were cut into half, quarters, or thirds/two-thirds.  This (plus straight joining seams vs. angles on the original) is what makes it into random plank instead of jelly roll race which is all full length (width of fabric) strips.

This quilt is almost twice the size of the jelly roll quilt and took me 6 hours and 5 minutes to sew it.  That doesn't count the time of pulling out 70 different fabrics and cutting 1 strip off each of them.

I have a chart on this post which gives you an idea of how many strips makes what size quilt.

  1. I must try this one time but I have so much trouble with curving seams on long strips! Yours looks fabulous!

  9. That is amazing! Time saver and gorgeous to boot! You always know how to work the colors--I don't think I would have chosen the checkerboard but I have a feeling you wouldn't have seen it as anything but that print!!
I'll have to check previous posts to see if you mentioned anything about that choice so I can learn to "think" like you.

  10. Gorgeous, Wanda. Must have taken as long to pull 70 fabrics, cut a strip from each, refold, etc. as it did to sew the quilt.

  15. I love the checker board! And, can you address what to do to keep blocks from repeating in the next row - where you don't want them too? Is is just math and impossible??

  18. Love this so much!

I see so much new potential now in my random-and-leftovers 2.5" strip bin...

  19. Oh, Wanda, this is luscious ! The addition of different length strips to begin with, plus the spacer squares makes this so much nicer than all those long strips that sometimes don't wind up cut in the original jellyroll quilt, in my opinion.

I'm collecting greens and blues right now, not knowing what I'll use them for, but this just became a lead contender. I think that yellow or gold spacer squares would be neat......or maybe hot pink or deep orange.

Beautiful job, girl ! Thanks for being an inspiration in quilting and in life.

  26. Oh your quilt is beautiful! I love using this jelly roll technique to make backgrounds but I think with Kaffe no applique is needed!
