The unfun part.......

The fun part is choosing the fabrics, piecing blocks and putting them on the design wall not knowing what I am making but knowing the quilt will reveal itself in the playtime.  The unfun part is cutting the binding and hanging sleeve and attaching them, designing the label, loading the next quilt on the longarm.  I spent the afternoon driving to church sewing circle, sewing for 2 hours and driving home, 3 1/2 hours in all.  Then I picked up branches in the backyard, cleaned the grill on the dryer vent, and filled the bird feeders.  I really wanted to have some fun then, making mindless creative blocks, but I knew I had to do the unfun parts instead.

  1. Unfun means a finish. I know your time is getting slim for your show. I hate to iron so we all have our most unfavorite things to do. The end result is rewarding. Chris

  2. In total agreement with Sewing Junkie! It may be the "unfun" part, but the fun comes when it is all done.. that feeling of unbridled satisfaction!

  3. For me the unfun part is at the beginning, I really don't enjoy cutting the fabric. Once the cuts are done I enjoy the sewing, pressing, design wall arranging, sewing again, etc. I even enjoy making the binding and putting it on cuz it means I am almost finished. The label is only fun when the idea comes quickly and I don't make hanging sleeves. So, once the cutting is done the fun begins.

  6. I am not a fan of telephone calls, so when it's time to have one, I put on a headset and get all my "unfun" things done while I'm having a nice visit with a friend...and before I know it, I've gotten a lot done and haven't hardly noticed. Try it!

  8. It's almost like "veggies, then dessert!" I don't like the unfun parts either, sometimes if a quilt doesn't have a deadline it'll take me a long time to simply put on the label! I have a small one now that I made in 2009, and the label is pinned to the front of it ... nevertheless, it's hanging proudly on my wall!

I have some of the black and white, I used it in a star quilt as sashing.

  11. I really do love putting on the binding. It's a good time to put on a movie and just mindlessly stitch away.
That black and white is fantastic!

  12. And right now I am sitting in front of this computer instead of doing the unfun parts. I like picking the fabric and then sewing it. I don't like the rest. Thankfully I send the quilts out to be quilted. I need to get to Plano soon. I have a bunch of quilts ready to be finished.

  13. For me the un-fun part is when it all starts getting big. I love cutting up small pieces and sewing the individual blocks together again. But I've just finished the center of a quilt top and am kind of dreading attaching the boarders. It's not even going to be a very big quilt!

I think it's just a matter of doing a little bit at a time and shuffling off to a different project when one gets un-fun.

  14. I'm sorry. I like the fun parts, too. But, you kind of have to do them all, don't you? You are doing very well at holding yourself to a schedule. And what pretty things you are completing!!!

  15. I totally agree on which parts are fun, and which are not. I have several here ready for bindings, which I keep putting off...
