I looked up several tutorials to come up with an average size for a mug rug but it looks like anything goes. This one was made from these leftovers. This one is 8" x 5 and 3/4"
I don't drink coffee and rarely drink any hot drink so I might use mine for my chili mug.
By the end of the day I had made 10 mug rugs. One was a disaster so I learned what not to do. It's on the bottom of the pile in the last photo on this post.
I had enough of the braid patchwork from many, many years ago to make 3 mug rugs. They are 9 and 1/8" x 6 and 3/4". The fused hearts are cut with my Studio cutter with a Go die and adaptor.
I guess this can be considered 2 pairs of mug rugs. They aren't exactly the same piecing but have matching binding.
I wanted to try this diagonal striped Kaffe print as a binding but it seems a little busy.
Here are all 10 of them. The bottom one is the disaster. I tried the method of folding the backing around to the front for a binding but it is wobbly looking. I thought I had taken a photo of it but I guess I didn't. I used the same purple, black, and white patchwork as I used on the journal cover the day before.

They turned out great, Wanda. We are still having the occasional 70 degree day here. I can't imagine living where you do and not sipping on hot drinks.
They all look great. I need to do something like it to for a Christmas gift for my neighbors. They are hard to buy for. You can use them for candle rugs also. Chris
The rugs look great! I make all sizes and we use a couple larger ones for "soup bowl" mats. I mainly just use a smooth edge finish with no binding for the smaller ones. Also read about your winnings....the fabrics are great. More stash!
They will make nice little gifts to brighten up someone's day. Also, they are a nice way to play with fabric combinations and techniques. My friend does all her bindings by wrapping to the front and machine stitching. Hers are very neat but I know mine would not be.
They are beautiful! Will they be Christmas gifts? I thought about making mug rugs for my co-workers for Christmas, but felt I would need to explain to them what it was, so I decided against it.

Wow, you really cranked out a lot of those yesterday! They look great! Even the "disaster" one :-). I think I will have to make some of these for Christmas gifts next year using some of my orphan blocks to start. Might like cute slicing and dicing them into the size I want.
I love your mug rugs. I have 10 to make today. My sister and niece will give them to coworkers as Christmas gifts. I enjoy making them. I think of them as little quilts and use them to audition ideas for larger quilts.
Of course I like the striped Kaffe ones best, but they all turned out great. Was gonna make a bunch for family last year but my sister (also a quilter) beat me to it, so now I have one from her on my desk and one on my sewing table... they are lovely to receive as gifts, as well as to make.

May I suggest with the one at the bottom of the pile you don't like that you use your rotary cutter and simply cut off the offending binding all the way round and rebind with a seperate new fabric binding. That way it isn't wasted. ( you might want to put in a row of stay stitching to hold the ends from coming undone, while you rework.)
I made a few of these as gifts once with a chicken theme. I think I will make some with a Christmas theme for gifts this year. Thanks for reminding me about them.
