I couldn't get a good photo of this top last night. It really is a little more lively in real life but I am pretty disappointed in it. I much prefer the shorter length pieces added in like I did on the batik one 2 days ago. This one is made from 3" wide strips, all full length and it finished at 78" x 101".
This close view shows that there are some pretty prints in it. The green that I used for spacers is brighter than it looks here. I was surprised how they lined up in 4 staggered horizontal rows. This will be an easy one to part with.
After I finished sewing this one I sewed together more batik short pieces that I found yesterday. I grabbed a pile of red and deep pink full width strips to add to the short pieces to equal approximately 54 full strips. It should finish out about 64" x 71". I may add a few more pieces to it so it will be a little longer.
Me, too! Of course, I am always a sucker for your beautiful batik quilts!
ReplyDeleteThis is pretty but not as eye popping as the first one. It will make a nice gift or sale item. Chris
ReplyDeleteA million years ago, when my son was about 3 or 4, I made and sold quilted placemats for a local craft shop. I had a lot of fabric strips about 3" wide. I decided to make a quilt for my son. I sewed the strips together, and for variety, I joined them at a 45 degree angle. I then sewed them together, as you describe a Jelly Roll Race. My son loved the quilt, and wore it out. I like your batik one better too.
ReplyDeleteI was struck by your observation of the strip length.... that a shorter length with the longer lengths made for a more interesting out come... will have to keep it in mind for my future use! Texas
ReplyDeleteOh, I so agree. I think the shorter lengths make the changes stand out more. Also, there is a loss of interest with prints. The bright one I made works because the colors are so contrasting but that's not true with most prints. Also, the spacers show up more with the batik than with the prints. But we have to try stuff, don't we, in order to really know what we like and why?
ReplyDeleteBoth quilts are beautiful, Wanda!
ReplyDeleteI love both of them!!
I've made two jelly roll quilts, myself. One used regular cotton quilting fabrics and the other batiks. Now when I look at the two I made and the two you made, I would like to try another one with 2 1/2" strips, a few long and many shorter pieces, and spacers.
Thank you for playing with jelly roll variations. This was a lot of fun.
I agree that the batik one is prettier. I did one of these with a jelly roll. I didn't like the way the colors kept lining up. It is now in my flimsy stack
ReplyDeleteYou're absolutely right. The design lends itself more to batiks than florals, IMNSHO.

Supposing that one had a preference, I'm trying to figure out what the necessary math would be so that one could contrive for the quilt have horizontal stripes instead of vertical stripes, yet still finish at the size one wanted. Hmm.
ReplyDeleteHave to agree with you...batiks and the short strips are beautiful. But my heart still has a soft spot for florals, a second and a third look and it grows on me! I haven't tried this technique with spacers, so I am putting it on the todo list. Thanks for inspiration.
ReplyDeleteThey are both beautiful, but I must admit that I have a love for your batiks!
ReplyDeleteI like the first one better too although this one is pretty also. I think the green squares are what I don't care for as much with this one.

Yep, the batik is much better, hands down, and probably the shorter pieces make a big difference, too.
ReplyDeleteI like the batik better too, but I do like the look of the spacers in this one.
ReplyDeleteI like your batik one better as well. I checked out the link you gave us. I have a question. It appears that your strips go vertical and theirs go horizontal. Is that true and how did you do yours? I really like yours better. I am very interested in doing this Jelly Roll Race for a guild program to make baby quilts. Do you know how I could make this smaller?
ReplyDeleteMe too, but this is interesting too. I think the spacers add interest to this one by adding that extra dimension.
ReplyDeleteI'm finding that, for me, I'd need to slice and dice these jelly roll quilts up more once they were sewn together...

So do I, but I think everything is better in Batiks.
ReplyDeleteI like the batiks better too. I wonder what the Kaffe fabrics would look like? I like the shorter lengths I think.
ReplyDeleteHa! I just finished one today that is so similar. Different colours and my accent pieces are wider.
ReplyDeleteIt's pretty -- but then, of course, I love florals -- but I agree, the batik is really stunning!
ReplyDeleteKnowing you... you will find a border to make this one a winner. I enlarge both photo's and it is far prettier 'up close and personal.'

ReplyDeleteThanks for posting this quilt top. I agree the first one was more interesting. I have thought about trying this quilt and will use the shorter strips now that I've see the longer ones. All in all the 2nd quilt is vert pretty! It's just that the first one was wonderful!
