2011 Journal quilt 8

After teaching classes 2 days in a row, I needed to do something loose and spontaneous.  I save strips that are too narrow to sew together for a lady who uses them for stuffing.  I decided to raid the bag and sew the strips onto batting and backing, overlapping about a quarter inch.  Then I went into my tiny scraps bin and pulled the little plastic bag with triangular shapes.  I overlapped them so they are like a mobile with each connecting to another all the way from top to bottom.  Everything is raw edge, no fusible, and topstitched with rayon thread.

  1. I love it! so pretty and such a good use of scraps - just goes to show what we can make with all of our tiny bits doesn't it.

  2. It is surprising what beautiful things can be made out of tiny pieces.

  3. This is very appealing! I find myself trimming away bits and as I toss them toward the waste basket, I tell myself there ought to be a use for these scraps. This shows me that there is!!! I really love your journal cover,

  8. Beautiful journal quilt - I love using scraps but have never made a journal quilt - perhaps its time to give it a go.

  9. How do you hang or otherwise display your journal quilts? Or what do you do with them? I think they are awesome!

  10. Without the triangles, that's how I made a set of place mats and a table runner. I made one very long strip of strips and then put it all on a backing and batting on the HQ and quilted it. Then I cut it into 4 place mats and 1 table runner. I love them. But I would never have thought to overlay them with scrap triangles: great idea. I am hoping to find inspiration here in Orlando for my March journal quilt. (It's really warm here)

  14. I LOVE this!!!! It's so gorgeous! The strips are so colorful but what really makes it are the scrap triangles. They look like they're flying away! Such a great piece, Wanda!

  15. Again, it amazes me that you can come home form classes and then sew. I'd be laid out! I like this journal quilt. I was wondering what it reminded me of as I read. It is very much like a mobile tinkling in the wind.

  16. It's Beautiful. Place mats, table runners, scaled up for a quilt. Several ideas here. Triangle mobile so creative. What do you do with all these lovely, Wandaful journal quilts?

  18. I love this, and what a fun way to use up "stuff". Freebie quilties are what I refer to these as, and nothing is better than free! :-)
