I did more wandering around and looking at things than anything else yesterday. I was looking for something in my basement and ran across these containers with 1.5" and 2.5" strips of flannel fabrics. Some are regular flannels and others are the brushed Moda's. One year for Christmas I gave 10 flannel quilts to family members for Christmas. I have also given a friend a plaid flannel baby quilt, a great nephew and his wife a flannel couch quilt, and last night a sister in law a flannel quilt to match her new living room. I have enough flannel stash for another 10 quilts, most of purchased at sales. I haven't started a flannel quilt for a couple years so I think this is the year to do it again. A couple of them will be 6.5" squares with lots of variety of plaids and stripes.
Flannel quilts are the best for snuggling in the winter. We all love them while watching the TV. In fact, I have to sometimes go retrieve them from the bedrooms to bring them back to the family room!
I have made several flannel quilts. They are soft and yummy to use. I did find a quilt pattern for 5 inch Courthouse step blocks. The strips are 1 inch. That would be a challenge to make with flannel. I think if I start collecting strips I will stick with quilting fabric for the first one. Less stretching. Chris
I have never made a flannel quilt and never even buy it - I don't know why I have just never gotten into flannel but they sound like they would be perfect on cold winter evenings. I might have to give this some thought for next year's quilting. Karen http://karensquilting.com/blog/
Slow down Sunday sounds so good. I found a box of fabric under a bed the other day. My daughter in law's mother gave it to me. By the way, we finally got some rain and cooler weather.
As a big fan of flannel in general and flannel quilts in particular, I will love seeing what you do with your stash.
I've made three flannel quilts and have a number of ideas for the leftovers and but I'm always on the lookout for some new ideas and know you will generate some. Have fun with it all!
The first flannel quilt I made was a chevron zig zag and yes, I cut the strips on a 45 so I was piecing flannel on the bias! It turned out wonderful even though it was a challenge to handle. I now know better, but it is one of my favorite quilts and I am so glad I made it.
I also have a stash of flannel from sales and left over. I did find some cool hockey flannel I want to make my son a quilt for Christmas. I will be looking forward to see your flannel quilts!
I was surprised to see you pull out something other than batiks and Kaffe fabrics and brights. I'm looking forward to seeing your plans. Do you prewash your flannels? or deal with washing only after the Q is done? I've heard some really strong arguments on both sides re: flannels.
Wanda, Thankyou so much for your fabulous blog. Can I ask you a question about sewing lots of triangles together?- do you have any tricks to making sure they all fit together and line up etc? (my apologies if you have already addressed this somewhere) Karen

We have one flannel quilt so far. There's another I want to get a start on making this fall. Definitely doing that one with the sewing machine!

I've used flannel for backing on several quilts, but have not made a quilt front from it.
