Another older quilt

This was the first Trip Around the World quilt I made prior to teaching the class. I think this one was made in 1994. I learned what not to do on this one for the proportions of the quilt. It is 87" x 121", or in other words, way too long for the bed. It is the first quilt I had someone else quilt for me. I was getting to the point of dreading the quilting on all of the queen size quilts I was making and thought maybe I would like to have someone else do it. I had about 8 or 9 done and then decided I needed to finish my quilts myself again. This one has been waiting all of those years for binding. I thought I had enough of the border fabric to bind it but in looking through all of my fabric for several years I only came up with enough to bind about 2 and a half sides. I have found another fabric that I like and will use both fabrics. If you were quilting in the early 1990's you may recognize some of these fabrics. Click on the picture to enlarge it.
I am pretty sure I will finish the binding all by machine on this one too.

I got up with a migraine yesterday morning with all the storms and wind and drop in temperature that we had. I was already scheduled to work at the store so I made the best of it. When I got home I took a nap and then turned on the light for the Trick or Treaters.
*************
I mentioned the other day that I take naps. I am usually drained by 2 p.m. and after a nap (body clock wakes me after 40 min.) I am good to go again for another 8 hours. I have heard that people that nap are healthier and that you really can catch up on the lost hours of sleep at night with a nap. I don't know how much of it is true, but I sleep better at night when I have had nap in the afternoon. Of course it helps that I am retired and have the luxury of rejuvenating myself in the middle of the day. So now you know the secret to my energy level.

  1. This quilt is lovely and I do recognize some of those fabrics. But I can't believe after all these years you still don't have it bound? Wow, time to get working on that! I wish I had the time to take a nap during the day. Occasionally, I might be able to catch 10 minutes and yes, that does help. Good for you that you are able to do so. Very envious over here.

  2. I'm surprised you never binded this quilt! Bet you will be glad to have it on your finished list! I never nap but wish I could with having fibromyalgia I have a hard time falling to sleep a nap would be so nice!

  3. My DH just walked by and admired the close-up of your quilt, then saw your profile photo and said you quilt very well for someone so young! :)
I guess we all have our own clocks. Now that I am retired, I find that I often doze in my chair for 10-15 min in the afternoon and wake very refreshed. If I sleep longer than that, I feel fuzzy headed the rest of the day.

  4. How I envy you I am a poor sleeper and a nap in the afternoon would be so nice.....but I don't seem to be able to do so. That quilt does look huge and I can understand your reluctance (at the time)to quilt it yourself.

  5. The color waves are so pretty in this quilts. You really have a great eye for color.

Ahhh....a nap. I always think that it would be a good idea, but never have the time for them. I had more time when I WAS working!!

  7. I used to not sleep at night if I had a nap, but that was ages ago (pun intended) so maybe this nap thing deserves a second chance!
Good for you finishing the binding. I was going to ask how many UFOs are hiding in your house, but maybe you don't want to count them? (smile)

  9. Your nap theory makes perfect sense. My kids sleep better at night with a nap. And I would do anything to be able to have a nap everyday.

  10. Another beautiful, beautiful quilt and I think the color choices are gorgeous. Naps are great! I have to say, though, that although you may be technically retired, it seems like you're always working, even if it's only on things you want to work on. Plus you have a lot of caretaking duties. I'm just so happy to check your blog every day and see what you're working on now. Thanks, Wanda!

  11. Another fantastic quilt! I don't remember any of those fabrics, but maybe it was before I started quilting. I always take naps. They are great. My cat taught me that!

  12. I hope every one begins to enlarge your photo's when ever they visit your blog. I love the detail that the enlarged photo gives us.
And these two pieces show just that.

I too have read that a daily nap will give you longevity. You pack more into those awake hours than any 3 people together !

And thank goodness, your blog is my daily sunshine.

  13. Hi Wanda
Very pretty quilt, and timeless colors. You were showing some of your "bright side" with this!

I don't have a very well-developed body clock; I try to tell myself "wake up after 30 minutes" before I take a nap but it ends up 2 hours. Have to set an alarm if I want to get a bunch of stuff done but need a brief nap.

  14. Another gorgeous quilt, Wanda- you have such fabulous color sense- it is a real gift.

One of the things I have started to do is bind my quilts with random strips of different fabrics from the quilt. It gives a funky look to the binding and solves the problem of having enough of one color to bind a quilt( I don't do that for all my quilts but have done it on various ones and I have liked how they look)
As for machine binding, for me it is the only way to go- I would never get a quilt bound if I had to do them all by hand.

This may sound like a strange question-
This has probably not ever happened to you because you have such great color sense but :Have you ever made a quilt that you thought was ugly - the colors didn't work for you? What did you do with it? Try to save it? Give it up as an idea gone bad? Just curious...

Hope the migraine goes away- they can be so painful and difficult to cope with.

Happy Sunday- I am off to have another bash at the basement- we are getting some stuff cleared out but it is quite a process. Too many years of things getting piled in the basement- trying to get organized can be a challenge in this house.

    Regards,
    Anna

  15. That is one of the prettiest quilts I've ever seen!
I wish I could nap. I try, but I just can't sleep in the daytime, for some reason.

  16. You certainly know the value of VALUE! This is a stunning quilt and no one will ever have time to discover the machine finish on the binding as their eyes will be fixed on the beautiful quilt.

  17. Oh, Wanda, I love the colors on your Trip Around the World. That is the first quilt I made for myself. I took a class and made a king size Trip quilt in greens and apricots. That was way before my "purple period" began! That quilt was on our bed for over 10 years. The dog got on it one day and ripped a few of the patches. She knew better because we never allowed her on the bed. That was a sad day for all concerned!
