I have changed the center and this is the final layout........
Thank you for all of the input yesterday. Several thought I should reverse the darks and lights but with the Radiant 9 patch (which was the original plan 10 years ago when I started it) there are a few lights in the center and lots of mediums and darks around the perimeter. I had less than 40 light blocks and over 300 medium to dark. As far as all of the suggestions that I do applique in the center, well.....it would never get done if I went with that plan, LOL. You haven't seen much applique on my blog. I love looking at it and don't love doing it. BUT it would have been a solution, just not my solution.
I plan on adding a row at each end (left and right) to make it more bed sized. I have leftover parts of blocks so I can piece specific ones that I need. I also have the perfect backing and border already in my stash.

They moved Dad's appointment with the surgeon yesterday from 4 p.m to 2 p.m. The Dr. thinks Dad (95 yrs.) should have surgery for the hernia since he is still able to walk around (not bedridden). He has to have a cardiac evaluation first and if he fails that, there will be no surgery. I told the Dr. I was concerned about the anaesthesia and he said he was too. He said it would most likely be a spinal block with an IV sedative. Now my next 4 weeks are in limbo again while we wait for the appointments to be set up.
This is definitely an improvement on the blank centre look. I've been drooling over the pictures of your blocks for days... I'm sad to see that the quilt blocks look so different from a distance when laid out as a top. I think I miss seeing all the pinks together, and the greens together and the mauves together. I guess some of my own biases are showing! Congratulations on getting the UFO back on the go.
ReplyDeleteThis layout is more pleasing than the first. I think you were correct with the first layout being too beige. This one gives it just the right balance. Having seen several radiant 9 patch quilts, I know what you are talking about when you talk about the original plan. But sometimes you just have to deviate. So glad to hear that you were able to discuss the anesthesia with your Dad's doctor. I am sure things will go well.
ReplyDeleteGreat improvement on the quilt.
ReplyDeleteI hope all goes well with your Dad. I feel badly for him having to deal with this now after your Mother dying not that long ago.
At 95 I would not do any surgery unless it fixes something that has become a major compromise on his life. That is just my opinion and of course you have good doctors and good advice.
Yes, the center is more appealing now. That big blank look is gone but it still has that radiant appearance. I've got several old projects started decades ago, too, that need some tweaking if I ever get interested in them again.
ReplyDeleteI hope your dad is able to have the surgery. It is such a concern when our elderly loved ones need serious stuff like that to keep their quality of life. I'll think positive thoughts for you and him.
Oh yes, I like this layout! I hope you Dad is able to get some relief soon.
ReplyDeleteThis looks much better than the other. Has much more interest.
ReplyDeleteI, too, like this layout much better. Now I am curious if you will add a border to the piece...or how you will quilt it...
ReplyDeleteThis layout is great -- love the little splashes of colour in the centre.
ReplyDeleteI hope it all works out for your dad -- and that the surgery can be accomplished without any problems.
Oh YES!!! I like better. Wig.
ReplyDeleteYES - this layout is MUCH better!! ... and I'm pretty sure there will NOT be a beige fabric chosen for the backing :-)
ReplyDeleteBest wishes with your dad ~ so glad to hear the surgeon is concerned and wants to work to reduce the procedures impact on your dad. Prayers for you as you work your way through all of this.
Wow. What a difference those center blocks made. It's just stunning.
ReplyDelete1. I like this layout - more balanced I think
ReplyDelete2. I hope everything works out with your dad. I'm sure it's pretty stressful, just take it one day at at time.
Much nicer layout. Good luck finishing it!
ReplyDeleteI wish you the best with your dad; these are not easy decisions, but if he's terribly uncomfortable, I can see why he'd want the surgery. I'll be thinking of you and him.
Still getting the luminosity, it looks great! So, do you think you'll get them all sewn together next Wednesday?
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your dad, hopefully he won't have to wait too long if surgery is the preferred route.
I have to admit it does look better this way. I really did like it before though.
ReplyDeleteLove the new layout! Hope things go well for your father.
ReplyDeleteWhat a difference a day makes! Love it, just love it !
ReplyDeleteYou surely have my understanding and concern with your Dad. And will continue to keep you both in my thoughts.

very nice, a big improvement and it looks really really nice. Maybe a dark pink variegated hombre thread will be the finishing touch?
ReplyDeleteYou found a lovely solution for the center of the quilt, Wanda. It has much nicer movement.
ReplyDeleteIt is hard waiting for appointments for our loved ones. I hope that they do not put your father through anything that will cause him or you undue stress.
Hang in there and will be sending you good thoughts.
Warmest regards,
Anna
It has been good to catch up and see all the different quilts you are making and they are all different!! keep up the good work. I'm thinking about you and your Dad. Take care.
ReplyDeleteit's beautiful! that little extra bit of color makes a big difference. I hope things go well with your dad -- it's so hard to make those kind of decisions...
ReplyDeleteI hope the tests go well for your dad. Is he in a lot of pain from the hernia?
ReplyDeleteI like this layout better. As you sew it together the colors will blend better too, I think.
Love this. It's very pleasing to the eye. Great job.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes to your Dad. Keep a quilter's optimism.
This looks MUCH better! I'd love to see it when it's done wit the border.
ReplyDelete******
I'll keep your dad in prayer.
BIG improvement. No hole. This even vibrates a bit.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes with your Dad.
I hope all goes well with your Dad. Hopefully, he passes the cardiac evaluation with flying colours.Your vanilla quilt is really starting to look interesting. For starting out as a pile of vanilla blocks, you certainly have changed the overall look of it. You give hope to all those vanilla quilters out there.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great layout. I think it is still a beige quilt, even with the bit of color here and there. Another beautiful job! Hope all works out with your dad. Taking care of our parents is not an easy task, is it? Don't forget to take care of yourself as well.
ReplyDeleteI like it. This quilt is going to have such a cozy feel. Best wishes and prayers for you and your dad.
ReplyDeleteAll those little squares and now they need to be sewn together. but it is and will be beautiful. Hope your dad's surgery goes well.
ReplyDeleteFirst let me send you good wished for your father and whatever decision comes to be from that! Surgery at such an age sounds scary.
ReplyDeleteAs for the beautiful sublte quilt. I love how you have worked out the colors. It is beautiful!
Thinking of you and your Father, hoping for the best. Please know that I do not expect an email response...I know that you have enough to take care of.
ReplyDeleteoh my goodness!! I think this is my favorite! It looks like a mosiac. And maybe a little like the pattern the TV makes when the weather isn't so good. It is amazing!
