last night. I just grabbed the scrap bag of Kaffe prints and made some blocks. These are similar to the ones I used for 2 little quilts earlier this year. I just needed the sewing machine humming away.
"Anonymous" identified the flower from yesterday's post, Valerian. Here is what Wikipedia says:
Other names used for this plant include garden valerian (to distinguish it from other Valeriana species), garden heliotrope (although not related to Heliotropium) and all-heal.
I guess my friend's grandma was right in calling it heliotrope after all. It is an herb with compounds made from the root.
What fun blocks! Kaffe prints play well together, but often they don't seem to play well with other fabrics. Don't quite understand that.
ReplyDeleteThe new blocks are lovely and I soooooo love your fabrics. This will be a great quilt when it is done.
ReplyDeleteThese blocks are so fun! You must've had a great time putting them together.
ReplyDeleteCute blocks!!! Glad your mystery is solved. Your garden must be beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThat is exactly what I have been wanting to do: play. What a great result you have here. I see another wonderful quilt in the making..
ReplyDeleteLove your Kaffe blocks! But I always enjoy your photos of the garden. The Valerian is fantastic!
ReplyDeleteValerian is a big part of homeopathic healing. It's used to help with insomnia and anxiety.
ReplyDeleteSo it's a sedative growing right out there in your garden. *S*
This is what I found on one website about Valerian--"Unfortunately, the whole plant, with the exception of the flower, has a putrid, rotted cheese.....smelly sock odor. In fact, the smell is bad enough for the early Greeks to have named it Phu (Phew!)." Just curious if yours smells bad? The website also said cats LOVE this plant and will 'worry it to death'. LOL
ReplyDeleteI, too, LOVE your colors!!
Hi Wanda, So interesting about theGarden
ReplyDeleteValerian.I always called it Heliotrope.Mine
is blooming (and spreading)Thanks to all who
researched it.jmh
Your blocks are so cheerful and, for some reason, remind me of summer weather and picnics.
ReplyDelete"Just needed the sewing machine humming away" No one does it better than you do Wanda. And what a delicious scrap bag of fabrics.
ReplyDeleteHeliotrope... Thanks for the info.

Play is good. I just started reading The Artist's Way and am ready to get back to my creative side again.
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree, those blocks look cheery and summery.
ReplyDeleteIt drives me nuts when non-quilters look at works in progress (i.e. unattached blocks) and say things like "how long did THAT take? How much longer before you finish it? So are you going to make them into potholders?" etc. No clue that playing with color and shape without a purpose has a purpose.

That explains why I thought I saw those flowers growing wild...what I see must be related! I hope the humming was a happier tune, Wanda. Great blocks...great comfort
ReplyDeleteAre you going 'light, dark, light, dark' or being a bit random? Either way they look great. I also agree with the top comment about Kaffe's fabrics playing well with each other.
