working on binding again

I started the hand stitching on the binding on this quilt last night. Here is a picture of the top when I finished sewing it together Jan. 22 last year. I wanted to bind it with one of the fossil fern prints and brown was the only one I had enough of. Even though I still have quite a stack of the prints, most are a quarter yard or less after making this quilt. This fabric is more loosely woven than batiks so I got over half of the binding done in one evening.

The snow pile along the driveway is now extending the full length of the driveway. What you can't see because of the shadow along the sidewalk is that the snow is more than a foot deep along there.
On the radio this morning at 7:15 a.m. they said it was -26 degrees but both of the local Internet sites only had -21 degrees. Almost every school in the area is closed. We have a chance to get up to freezing by Tues. next week and a chance to get back above 0 today.

  1. I always go first to your blog to see what the temps are in Sandwich. I was shocked to see how cold it had gotten. I was also shocked that it was down to 3° here when I woke up.
Luckily it won't last for either of us...and we have lots of fun inside stuff to do.
    Keep warm.

  3. Bitterly cold here, too, and our furnace broke! They did come fix it, almost midnight before they left. I am SO ready for spring.

  5. Gorgeous quilt! I love the colours, very nice in winter, like a fireplace. And how exact the binding is made, I could never do it so neatly. Applause!

  6. I love that quilt. I want to make one also. I don't have quite enough Kaffe fabrics in the right colors yet. Yours is beautiful as always.

  7. I love that quilt -- the colours are so rich and warm. Warm-looking quilts right now are perfect. We have wind chills of -30. Looks like by Monday or Tuesday it will warm up for a few days. Is it really only the middle of January? This feels like it has been an incredibly longer winter already and we have at least 2 more months to go!

  8. The quilt is wonderful warm colors. Perfect for such a cold, cold day! You are much colder than we are. We were at -8 and I think we have gone up above 0. But when you are in the negatives it is just plain cold. Great day to stay in and quilt!

  10. The fossil fern is perfect. I used to have some in brown but now it's long gone. It's cold here too but supposed to warm up this afternoon. It hasn't happened yet!

  11. As always, another lovely quilt. These colors are favorites of mine too.

This week I heard an eastern US TV station refer to the weather they were getting using the term "Alberta Clipper." While what we are experiencing could be a Chinook, I may have some good news for you. It is sunny, warm, and thawing today -- 40° F. in the shade, in Alberta. So if you just wait a few days...!

  12. I'll bet you didn't try that new binding technique I sent to you. If you had, that binding would have been finished in half the time.

Looks to me like we're done with sub-zero temps for the foreseeable future.

  13. Wanda, it was minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit on our front porch this morning, and since Chicago is a 'heat island' (Lake Michigan plus all that asphalt), I know it was colder out by you! -26 sounds about right!

    I do love that quilt!

  14. Oh, I absolutely LOVE that quilt, Wanda! Another must-have to add to the queue, I think. I can see it on my king-size bed, in the dead of winter, warming things up nicely!

Oh, great. Another thing to add to the shopping list while I'm in California next month: batiks and fossil ferns in hot colors. My suitcase is going to be bulging!

  15. I love the way your binding looks. You do it the same way I do....might take a tiny bit longer than other methods, but you can't beat the finished look!

  16. Goodness! I thought it was cold here, in the teens!

  17. Another quilt finished!!! You are amazing!

  18. Wow, Wanda,
Your binding complements the quilt top so well, and like others have mentioned, your quilt looks nice and warm.
You have us beat with the cold temps. And the cold plus snow makes for nasty driving conditions -- everything is so, so slippery. I did a 360 in my neighborhood last night while going less than 20 MPH.
    Take care and keep warm!

  19. Wow! I hadn't fully realised just how cold -20F was until I just converted it online - even colder than I'd thought!
