Time to decide

This is what I had in mind when I started these blocks, that I would use a light Kaffe print to border each block and then trim the blocks all to the same size. I'm not sure I like it now. Here are the blocks I made last night. Notice they aren't all the same size because I am using clean up cuts to make them, and they vary anywhere from 1.25" to 2" in width.
I will have to do a little more playing with this one yet.

It is -5 degrees at 9 a.m. I wonder how cold it was at 6 a.m.

  1. -5, wow. Glad I live in Virginia!

  2. Sounds like you will be having a white Christmas. I love the blocks you have made, would not have thought to put some of those fabrics together.

Will have to borrow your ideal, throw in a few batiks, and maybe square them up at an angle, make a wonky block. I love your blog, it give me a starting point for new quilts.

Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year

  3. what do you mean by clean up cuts?
I love the blocks and feel you can put any of kaffe's fabrics together and they look great--why not just put the blocks together, wonky and not in straight lines, without the borders--what fun fabrics they are.

  4. At 6:30 a.m., we had -9 F. The wind is howling and the roads are drifting. As my father used to say, it's a day not fit for man nor beast.

There is a certain beauty to the day, though. All our trees are encased in ice due to the 2 inches of ice we got the other night. The sun is shining and when it hit the trees, it looks like everything has been dipped in diamonds. I have been having a kaleidoscope of light dancing across my walls most of this morning. Beautiful to watch although not beautiful to be outside in.

I love the blocks but I'm not so fond of the lighter fabric in between. I have faith that you will find something that works better and you will know it when you find it.

    Stay warm, Wanda.

  5. I have to agree. I am not sure that the light fabric is working well. What if you use almost a mottled black? That would make the blocks really pop...

We now have 12 + inches of snow and right now mother nature is dropping another 8 inches on top of that. It is pretty, but enough is enough.

I can't wait to see what you choose for your layout.

  6. Oh Wanda I love it with the light fabric. It is unusual. I will be interested to see what you decide.

  7. well....hhhmmmm...this is just 'my' opinion...but, that background fabric kinda works against your blocks..with these blocks laying there it looks sorta floral-ish.....hhhmmm....i don't usually give suggestions when people ask 'quilty' advice on their projects for fear of offending...that is 'not' my intention here...just hope i'm being helpful...you know i'm a 'fan'!!!

  8. I agree that that busy, light fabric is just too much for those blocks. Do they even need sashing?
I guess it's "warm" here by comparison -- we were just at -1, but the windchill was -24. At least we're not getting snowed in like they are back east.

  9. I think the light sashing/background is intriguing. Maybe if you left even more space between the blocks? What if the blocks weren't spaced evenly (which sounds necessary because of the differing sizes) and maybe connected by thin strips. Something Tinker-Toy-ish, maybe.

    Anxiously watching..... !

  10. I'm all for dark fabrics to show up multi-colors.
Our wind chill is -32 which is -25.6 for you. That's cold in any scale. It is beautiful with bright sunshine and sparkling snow. I may just have to go for a walk in spite of the temp.

  11. I'm loving the blocks and the wonkiness of it all, but the sashing is distracting from the beauty of the blocks in my opinion. I love the Kaffe Fassett shot cottons. Have you thought about using that?

I love that on Sunday I can count on the fact that you will have a new entry on your blog. You are probably the most faithful of all in that regard. I appreciate it, because I can't my day started without eye candy and my coffee.

    Stay warm!

  12. My suggestion would require you to make a set of alternate blocks (light center, dark, light). Rather than sash the quilt, could you just alternate blocks (dark framed next to light framed block). That way, the value would be balance (like I need to tell YOU that).

  13. I love those blocks, but I'm not sure about the sashing. Having seen some of the beautiful things you have done, I don't think you need my advice. Just do what feels best. It will undoubtably be fantastic.

  14. I'm sorry you don't like how it looks. I do! So send it off to me!

  15. I really like the square in a square blocks. I'm not too sure about the light sashing. But you have such a good eye - you'll make it wonderful I am certain!

  16. Hi Wanda,
You always said that batiks and Kaffe fabrics play well together, so maybe a batik would help the blocks have some unity.
We have "blizzard-like" conditions right now (4 degrees F, minus 20 wind chill) so staying in and stitching is the plan!

  17. I'm going to agree with the person who said a batik for the sashing. Would still add color, but maybe a few if you used a multicolor batik.

We have 20" of snow under 2" of ice. We had a water pipe burst this morning and I took a dive off the porch trying to get to the water main to turn it off. I'm being good by playing on the computer. Hope everyone stays safe and warm, this weather isn't good for anyone!

  18. With such cold weather, it must be tempting to remain indoors, & cosy!
    Love those blocks.

  19. Your blocks are great, as usual. They are so colorful and bright. Lots of movement.

I sit here complaining how cold it is (low 40s) and you have minus temperatures. Good luck on getting the ice melted. Do you loose power during these severe storms? Take care.

  20. I love the blocks. This layout is busy but fun. Maybe you could group some of like size and then sash them. Then sew the groups together. Will be anxious to see what you do.

  21. As always, the colors and patterns are right on. Are you planning to sew the blocks onto the material or do you have it that way just to show what it will look like?

  22. I love your blocks, but I too am not loving that light sashing fabric. I know you'll find something that will knock my socks off! (no pressure, Wanda! Hee hee)

Sorry to hear that your weather is being so wintry! Ugh. I hope your power stays on and you stay warm and cozy!

  23. EWWW WEEEE that is COLD! Hey, I know you are going to come up with something awesome but I like what Diane said. Merry Christmas.
