When I was in the basement going through things I found a stack of 4" Kaffe squares and some hourglass blocks. I had this box in my main floor studio so I brought the blocks upstairs. This box is 7" x 11" x 5.5" and it was quite full already.
Here is a peek inside.
I started pulling out piles to see what was in there.
Then I took everything our of the box and separated them by like sizes. Curiosity got the best of me, so while I watched Antiques Roadshow I started counting pieces. There are 189 squares, 52 hourglass blocks, 41 four patches, etc. There are enough pieces to make about 180 more blocks. All in all I estimate there is potential for 482 four inch finished blocks which could make a quilt 76" x 100". Wow! I don't need to cut any more scraps in that size.
The only decision I made on backing from yesterday's post, was to eliminate all that I was sure I wasn't going to use, and that left these 4 as contenders.
I decided there won't be enough left from backing fabric (left) for binding so I looked for another piece from the same time period, that would look good for binding. The one on the right is what I came up with and there will barely be enough.

The binding fabric you found is beautiful and is perfect for the quilt. I try to be extra careful when cutting binding strips when there is barely enough fabric but if I make a cutting mistake, I’ve become comfortable substituting a strip of similar fabric. When I first started quilting, I would have found new fabric to start over with. Don’t know if it’s age/experience or just a realization that it’s not wrong to sub a piece in, lol.
ReplyDeleteOooh, I predict a challenge -- assembling all those 4" parts/units! Let me get the popcorn to sit back and watch.....
ReplyDeleteBarely enough means you will use up all of that piece! That box sure had a lot of goodies in it. Is it time to turn it all into a quilt top?
ReplyDeleteWhy not mix the leftover backing with the "barely enough" piece and create a deliberately blended binding? What a treasure box you unpacked!
ReplyDeleteWOW what a lovely "find" in that parts dept of yours, Wanda;))) I can foresee some very nice quilts coming soon;))).
ReplyDelete65 here early morning and quite humid--back to Summer today..did my food shopping first thing and having my cuppa coffee now...taking it slowly for a bit...hugs, Julierose
Kaffe 4" Parts Department. I love the name you gave that box, and I bet you come up with a least one beautiful project.
ReplyDeleteYour ‘signature’ fabrics never disappoint. All so vivid and and “exuberant”
ReplyDeleteAny piece you come up with will be a winner.
ReplyDeleteYour box certainly contained a wealth of fabric ready for one or more quilts and lots of fun! Yes, full of exuberance!!
ReplyDeleteHugs!
that is nice you have enough already cut to start designing!
ReplyDeleteA lucky find in your basement Wanda, luscious pieces of Kaffe fabrics.I'm only now trying to catch up with a couple of posts from each blogger - to cover everyone I've missed would be mind blowing! So, I'm looking at the little quilt from your Monday post, it's a fascinating layout and a riot of colour. ave you decided on the border fabric out of the four runners?
