Thinking about layouts.....................

There are just 8 more Broken Dishes blocks waiting to be sewn so it is time to think about layouts  I have to try several to get an idea what i like best.

This one is pretty straight forward, 8 blocks across, 10 down for a 48" x 60" quilt.  It could have a border to increase the size.

Grouping them in 4s with either borders all around each block or sashing between blocks.  Estimating 1" borders or 2" sashing, it would be 58" x 72" and could still have a border added.

My brain isn't ready to figure out how many blocks across and how many down x the diagonal measurement right now.  I think I have a chart for that.  Set this way they look like Hourglass blocks instead of Broken Dishes.

The setting triangles could be half blocks or something spicy like onion rings, or one of the other black and white Brandon Mably prints.

So many ideas, and 120 blocks to work with.

I wonder if there are any other settings I could consider.  I could also save the blocks to use as a border around a quilt top.  I always hate having to make a pieced border when I have a top almost completed.  This way I could have the border first and make the center second.

  1. Or, with just a little more work, you could have a 1" frame around each block AND a 1" high contrast sashing with cornerstones! Only you can decide if you want it done or more elaborate! I'm at the 'get it done' point in my life, so that's what I would vote for!

  3. I am with you on hating to do a pieced border when a center is almost finished!

  5. Love this post—so fun! Do you have any tops at the moment that would like a pieced border? I love the idea; don’t remember a finish of yours done that way. I’ve only done one pieced border and it was back in the 80s. -Roxanne

  7. I might be tempted to go with the "future border" plan (and like you, my brain hurts trying to sort out on point layouts).

  8. I like on-point the best . . . until you come up with something completely unexpected.

  9. Wanda, I love broken dishes when they make star patterns. I.e., layout #1 but turn alternate blocks 90 degrees.

  11. Never dreamed you could create so many designs with this block. Such fun to see the variety you have come up with. Each layout has a beauty all its own.

  14. The possibilities are endless, aren't they?! Love these colorful, happy blocks and look forward to seeing which setting you choose. None would be wrong, of course.

    Hugs!
